BOUND with 2 other Missal texts.‎

‎" Mechlinae ( Mechelen ), H. Dessain, sucessor P.J. Hanicq, 1855, in-folio, 39,5 x 27 cm, [1] (40) nn pp + 514 pp + CLIV pp ; [2] (4) nn pp + 26 pp + (70) nn pp ; [3] 110 pp + (20) nn pp. The first part [1] is the Mechlin Missale ; Part [2] Missale Romanum, cum Missis Eccl. Rotomagensi Propriis, Rouen, Fleury, 1861. Part [3] Missae Propriae Archi. Parisiensis-J.H. Guibert, Paris, Le Clere et Socii, 1873 Bound in black morooco, edges painted red, kept in a purposely made wooden box, lined with red velour. The book is in excellent condtion, notwithstanding some minor scratches at the binding and 1 tab which has come loose. The box is worn and a bit scruffy. Fine , important and unique specimen of a 19th c. illuminated missal, produced around 1860-1870 when the art of ''missal painting'' was at its highest level. As often with 19th c. illumination we were unable to identify the artist. The calender of the Mechlin missal contains some illuminated additions which most probably refer to the patron of the art work '' Em. de Trémauville de Beaucourt '' (uncertain ?). Missal [1] and [2] each are preceded by a separate manuscript title. All pages have different elaborate coloured borders. The initials are either figurative or heightened with gold and you find them on nearly every page. The subtitles and full page engravings ( 8 ) are all fully painted. The second missal [2] is printed on high quality vellum paper and is equally illuminated, allthough in a somewhat lighter style. Missal [3] with the addenda is not illuminated. A stunning example of the 19th c. revival of the art of illumination, finely preserved."‎

‎Ecclesia Catholica - MISSALE ROMANUM - Pope PIUS V - Clemens VIII - Urbanus VIII - Haeredes BALLEONIOS ( printer -publisher ) : :‎

Reference : 56476

‎Missale Romanum ex decreto sacrosancti concilii Tridentini restitutum. S. Pii V. jussu editum, Clementis VIII et Urbani VIII Papae Auctoritate Recognitum, in quo Missae novisimae sanctorum accurate sunt dispositae. (Half-title : Novum Missale Romanum).‎

‎" Venetiis ( Venice -Venetia), apud Haeredes Balleonios , 1849, format in-folio (40 x 25 cm). Title page with engraved vignet and typographical border printed in blue + 44 pp + 1 leaf with lithographed ills. on both sides + 548 pp + lxxxviii (88) pp + (1)(errata) + 3 full page mezzotint plates. (complete but for 1 lithograph -tabula I (?) in the introductory leaves). The missal is entirely printed in red and black, in two columns, with numerous woodcut initials, all page with a double fillet border with corner ornaments.; many pages with printed scores of music ( red printed staves, 12 per column). Bound in contemporary half roan, boards covered with marbled paper, binding with some wear but still a very good copy with a near spotless interior. The missal was probably never used. It belonged to the library of the Belgian printing house Hanicq - (later) Dessain, which collected these missals as they were themselves publishers of missals and liturgical books for the Roman Catholic Church. (Identification via a small paper label on the spine with only a number ( nr. 714). In-folio missals in this condition are very rare. The book was in daily use during the celebration of the mass which resulted after a lapse of time in heavy wear.."‎

‎"Missale Romanum ex decreto sacrosancti concilii Tridentini restitutum, S. PII V Pontificis Max. iussu editum Clementis ; Urbani VIII auctoritate tecognitum.....cum approbatione Sacrorum Rituum Congragationis."‎

‎" Ratisbonae ( Regensburg ), Sumtibus, chartis et typis Friderici Pustet, 1863, in-folio, 40 x 26,5 cm, (34) nn pp (with chromolithograpic title; typographical title, calender...) + 548 pp (with several full page steel engraved plates ) + (179) pp + (1)nn pp ((ad Lectori) + xlviii pp (appendix missarum) + 16 pp (Missae Proproae Sanctorum....Dioecesis Leodiensis). The last part (16pp) is printed in the same typography by the Mechlin publisher-printer Dessain and indicates that the missal was intended for use in the Diocese of Liège (Southern Belgium).. All pages printed in red and black with intricate typographical border. Printed in two columns, with numerous picturial initioals. , . BINDING : Full red-brown morocco, smooth spine with engraved silver title., both covers decrated with important silver decoration: frontcover ''the last supper'' ; backcover ''nativity scene'', two working silver clasps ; corners with large silver triangle protections (9cm). All silver decorations with the silver marking ''J)(D'' (unidentified, probably Liège) All edges gilt. With end papers in red colored silk. Fine silver binding in fine condition with hardly any traces of use,(the outer joints are expertly restored). Interior fine and without stains or foxing. which is rare because these missals were in daily use during mass service in the Roman Catholic church. The missal, always in Latin, was the most important book in the Roman catholic liturgy and served during mass (Eucharist celebration). It was made universal for the Church at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and virtually made redundant at the Second Vatican Council in the 1960's. Finely preserved missal in a spectacular and wel preserved silver bindin."‎

‎Missale Romanum ex decreto sacrosancti concilii Tridentini restitutum. Concilii Tridentini Restitutum, Pii V. Pont. Max. Ivssv editvm.‎

‎" Antverpiae, (Antwerpen), Ex Officina Christophori Plantini, 1574, in-folio, 32 x 21,5 cm. 6 parts with a total of 718 pp. Voet n° 1685. Collation *4, **-****8, A-S8, T4, V6, Aa-Gg8, a-k8, l4, AA-GG8, +-++4, +++2. Collation against Voet reveals that this copy is complete but for 6 leaves . The missing leaves are: A1 (pp1-2) ; B4-5 (pp. 23-26) ;T4 (canon plate) ; V5-V6 (pp 305-308). Condition description: title with thumbing and a hole repaired (no loss of text), Corner of leaf C7 missing, text replaced in manuscript . Contemporary notes in the margin of e.g. leaf ****3 made illegible. Leaves V1-4 (canon part) with traces of use and thumbing (heavy on pp. 304), some pages of the canon part mounted. Apart from these defects, on the whole still a good copy. The book has been rebound in full calf (end 19th-beginning 20th c. ?). Title label on decorated spine.. Entirely printed in red & black, in two colums, with many woodcut illustrations (some full page) by e.g. M. Hemskerck, P. Galle, Pieter van der Borcht, and cutters Antoon van Leest, Arnold Nicolai, Cornelis Muller. Very few 16th c. missals have survived. They were in daily use for celebrating the Romam Catholic mass (hence the worn pages of the canon part). Most of these books were either removed when completely worn, or put out of use when liturgy changed. When Voet compiled his bibliograpy he could trace two copies of this edition (one in his museum in Antwerp , the other in Munich Bayerische Staatsbibliotheek). The last 30 year another 5 copies have come alight - thanks to Internet. (Pettegree n° 10780 - USTC 406072). Approx. 400 copies were printed, most of these were shipped to Spain. This missal was also printed with copper engravings instead of woodcuts. Allthough ca. 1200 copies were printed with copper engravings not one copy survived."‎
