‎LETTRES PORTUGAISES.

- ENGLISH DESCRIPTION: Henri MATISSE - M. ALCAFORADO : LETTRES PORTUGAISES. Lithographies originales de Henri Matisse (1946). Paris, Tériade, 1946. Vol in-4 (27.5 x 22 cm), in loose sheets under illustrated cover with a lithograph, titled folder and publisher's slipcase. - 105 ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS BY HENRI MATISSE : 15 full-page portraits printed in bistre, 55 ornaments printed in purple including 5 full-page, 35 initials lithographed in purple. - Edition: 270 copies all on Arches paper signed by the artist. This one n° 93 signed in ink by Matisse (Impression Jourde et Allard for the text and Mourlot Frères for the lithographs). - HISTORICAL NOTE: The "Portuguese Letters" appeared for the first time, anonymously, in 1669. These five admirable love letters evoke the novel of a French officer in the service of Portugal. Having seduced a nun, sister of one of his comrades in arms, and having abandoned her, he replied, on his return to France, only coldly to the letters full of ardor that the young woman addressed to him. The way in which Marianna Alcaforado analyzes the stages of her passion is striking, and this poem of amorous disappointment has more to do with the literary art of seventeenth-century France than with the age of the convent. It was believed that the "hero" of the adventure was a certain Chevalier de Chamilly, but it quickly appeared that the author of this "literary deception" was Count Laverne de Guilleragues, a friend of Racine and one of Madame de Maintenon, who was to become ambassador to Constantinople. As for the heroine, a contemporary note on a copy of the first edition of the book, discovered in 1810, designated her as Marianna Alcaforado, from Béjà, between Extremadura and Andalusia. - BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: Matisse was bewitched by this work, nearly a hundred editions of which had been published since its inception. He entirely designed the work on which he worked for many months. He designed a special alphabet and adorned the book with initials, decorations and motifs of pomegranates, peaches and almond blossoms, drawn in purple, and fifteen full-page female faces, an admirable continuation where the initial purity of the face of the nun evolves over the course of the very violent passions that cross her, faces where femininity and love are composed, perhaps thus summarizing the deepest concerns of designer Matisse... Matisse chose a 14-year-old Russian girl, Doucia Retinsky, the daughter of a shopkeeper in Nice, as his model. Undeniable artistic and editorial success, the book also enjoyed great commercial success since all the copies found takers before the end of 1946. - Scarce copy in original condition. Signed by Matisse. Perfect condition of preservation. Bibliography: Duthuit Henri Matisse Illustrated Books No. 15, p. 89 to 107. Additional photographs of the book on request.‎

‎Henri Matisse : "Cut-outs", "Jazz"‎

‎, Taschen, 2009 Hardcover, 480 pages, ENG, 400 x 300 x 80 mm, NEW !! , 2 volumes !, Full Paged Illustrations in colour / b/w, Includes a sturdy hard cardboard box for protection ! Second volume even covered in plastic foil ! Brandnew !. ISBN 9783822830529.‎

‎A perfect facsimile of Jazz, a 20th century masterpiece This two-volume edition includes a perfect facsimile of Matisse's seminal cut-out work: Jazz. At last, readers can experience Jazz as if holding the 1947 original. The reputation of Henri Matisse (1869?1954) as the most important artist of the modern era is rivaled only by Picasso?who himself said, "All things considered, there is only Matisse." Towards the end of his monumental career as a painter, sculptor, and lithographer, an elderly, sickly Matisse was unable to stand and use a paintbrush. So at almost 80 years of age, he developed a new technique: he drew shapes on colored paper, cut them out and pasted them together. These gouaches decoup?es (gouache cut-outs) represented a revolution in modern art, yet their simplicity was dismissed by many critics as the folly of a senile old man. Later critics realized that Matisse had found a brilliant solution to the age-old conflict between line and color?one that would profoundly influence generations of artists to come. Printed in exactly the same colors, using paper and inks similar to the 1947 edition, the facsimile volume allows readers to experience Jazz in its original, unbound form. * Printed in 18 colors on a small offset press, 4 pages at a time, to obtain the highest fidelity to the original * Printed on Old Mill in 190 g/m from Italian paper mill Fedrigoni. This paper is of archival quality and has a felt-like softness, much like handmade paper * As with the original, this reprint is unbound and folded in signatures of 4 pages. It is protected by a French folded jacket and a hard-backed cover The second volume provides a thorough historical context to Matisse's cut-outs, tracing their genesis in his 1930 trip to Tahiti, through to his final years in Nice. Also included are other pivotal works from his later career, including his contributions to Verve magazine and his exquisite decoration of the Vence Chapel. Includes rare and historic photographs by Matisse taken in Tahiti, as well as photos of Matisse by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassa?, and the filmmaker Murnau. The text is supplemented by quotations from Matisse, Picasso, E. T?riade (the publisher of Jazz and Verve), the poets Louis Aragon, Henri Michaux, and Pierre Reverdy, and Matisse's son-in-law, Georges Duthuit.‎
