Summary Was blicherweise am Rande einer Ausgabe steht, r ckt in den Mittelpunkt des vorliegenden Bandes: die praefationes zu den Basler Gesamtausgaben von drei prominenten Kirchenv tern der lateinischen Tradition (Ambrosius von Mailand, Augustinus von Hippo und Gregor der Gro e). In der fr hen Neuzeit (bis ca. Mitte 16. Jh.) war Basel ein europaweit bekanntes Zentrum f r die Buchproduktion und die Edition antiker und fr hchristlicher Autoren. Die Vorreden bzw. Widmungsbriefe der Ausgaben dieser Schriftsteller beleuchten das geistlich und philologisch gepr gte Interesse f r die genannten Autoren, die in der Zeit des Humanismus und der Reformation wiederentdeckt und neu gelesen wurden. Diese praefationes sind kulturhistorisch aufschlussreiche und sprachlich oft kunstvoll gestaltete Paratexte. Sie lagen bisher zumeist nur in den jeweiligen Fr hdrucken vor; hier werden sie zum ersten Mal kritisch ediert und durch eine deutsche bersetzung sowie einen knappen Kommentar erschlossen. Antwerpen 2008, de Vlaamse Opera. Aviel Cahn wordt aangesteld als de opvolger van Marc Cl meur. Hij is met zijn 33 bij de jongste opera-intendanten van Europa. Aanvankelijk is er enige argwaan rond zijn leeftijd, maar die wordt algauw gecounterd door het gerucht dat hij een magneet zou zijn voor internationaal fris talent en niet terugdeinst om zijn duidelijke visie door te drukken. Op de muur van de kantine komt een duidelijke boodschap te staan: "Wij zijn een operahuis, creatief & gepassioneerd, relevant & actueel. En we delen deze goesting met iedereen." Dit is de aanzet van een 720-pagina's tellend boek over de tien "Cahn Jaren" bij Opera Vlaanderen. Het resultaat van gedurfd en consistent out of the box thinking. Het monumentale boek dat in een kunstige box huist - naar keuze met werk van Koen van den Broek, Kati Heck of Maurizio Cattelan en ToiletPaper - neemt de lezer mee langs een 70-tal operaproducties. De exclusieve fotokatern is ware eye candy. Maar toch is Opera out of the box meer dan een retrospectieve. Het geeft een inkijk in de keuken van het operahuis. Het laat zien hoe belangrijk de neus van de intendant is bij castings, hoe vruchtbaar de kruisbestuiving met andere kunstdisciplines kan zijn, n hoe gewaagd het is om met first timers als regisseur te werken. Het denken in cycli, of hoe ge ngageerd opera wel kan zijn, hoe het operahuis communiceert, vervolledigen het plaatje. "Het boeiende bij opera vind ik de wrijving tussen het verwachtingspatroon van het publiek en wat je uiteindelijk brengt. Toegegeven, ik ben soms graag een agent provocateur. Nooit vrijblijvend, altijd om tot nadenken te stemmen." Aviel Cahn Cahn zwengelde graag het debat aan, waarbij hij de controverse niet schuwde. Op gezette tijden werd het publiek wakker geschud en kreeg het de ruimte om kritisch te blijven tegenover de producties en hun statements. Seizoensthema's verbonden bekende titels met weinig opgevoerde werken. Er waren geen heilige huisjes wat interpretatie betreft. Ook de bondgenoten in dit proces zijn niet de usual suspects. We zien hoe gerenommeerde kunstenaars, modeontwerpers, theaterregisseurs, filmmakers en acteurs vaak voor het eerst de arena van het operahuis binnentraden. Het leverde telkens verrassende invalshoeken op. Dankzij deze gangmakers vonden vaak nieuwe publieksgroepen voor het eerst hun weg naar de opera. Het ergste commentaar dat je als medewerker van de intendant op een creatief voorstel kon krijgen, was: dat is saai. En dat is Opera out of the box allerminst. Het is een boek dat niet louter de operaliefhebber kan plezieren, maar ook boeiend is voor iedereen die avontuurlijk genoeg is om een bijzonder universum te verkennen. Aan het boek werkten 16 auteurs en 10 interviewees mee uit binnen- en buitenland, waaronder recensenten, artistiek leiders, dramaturgen, kerkelijk leiders, theatermakers, librettisten, componisten en regisseurs. Summary This study interrogates press caricatures and cartoons, staged revue and opera parodies to reveal the role they play within the Parisian theatrical, social and cultural sphere. From the beginnings of Wagner reception in Paris, through the heyday of opra-bouffe in the hands of that comic genius Herv, to the international operatic repertoire played on Parisian stages in the 1890s especially works by Verdi and Wagner performed during an increasingly tense nationalist climate alongside those by Massenet, Reyer and Saint-Sans this book examines the workings of parody which draws on opera for its subject material, its appeal, and for whom. Parodys repetition of dramatic and musical conventions is compounded by the abundance of revue shows on Parisian stages, by prolific authors such as Clairville, which deftly used well-known opera and operetta repertoire alongside the scie that popular tune given new words countless times over to create new yet familiar theatrical experiences. Indeed, by the 1890s, the words and musics of Faust, Carmen and Guillaume Tell in particular, held resonant value to signify the operatic. Aside from political caricature in which the figure of Wagner became embroiled, the ways in which parody brings together the high and the low to mock cultural norms, to neutralise alterity or innovation and refocus commentary onto internal, local, conventional and legitimised cultural products and debates becomes apparent. Opera and Parody in Paris, 18601900 thus uncovers a huge amount of primary and hitherto unpublished sources in an analysis of highly appealing intermedial materials that dominated Parisian print and stage culture in the late-nineteenth century. Tragedy and Lieto fine in Romantic Opera Seria

Summary In a seminal essay Carl Dahlhaus has pointed out that often it is possible to turn the ending in a different direction without making any difference to the substance of the tragic course of events leading to it . Dahlhaus' statement is especially relevant to Italian Romantic opera seria. Whereas Lieto fine was central to the ethics of eighteenth-century Enlightenment opera, Romantic opera turned to heartbreaking tragic endings, often as means of social and political criticism. Yet the ending of a Romantic opera was not inevitable, and a significant proportion of Romantic operas have Lieto fine. An example is Rossini's Tancredi that was premiered in 1813 first with Lieto fine (Venice), then with a tragic ending (Ferrara), and again with Lieto fine (Milan), suggesting that the ending was not essential to the opera. The book analyzes the processes leading to Lieto fine in 23 operas from Tancredi to Puccini's La Fanciulla del West . This includes mixed endings, such as in Verdi's Macbeth that ends with a hymn of victory, yet centers on the human tragedy of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The book discusses both canonic and unjustly neglected operas, such as the socialist Papa Martin by Antonio Cagnoni.
