‎ERASME‎

Reference : 17147

He was councillor in the Parlement of Britanny when it was created in 1554 and later rose to the rank of president of the Parlement in 1570 and played an important role in the judiciary of the duchy. "Bourgneuf died in 1587 having amassed quite a considerable library that was subsequently given to the Capuchin convent of Rennes. The Capuchin library was seized at the Revolution and handed over to the town, becoming one of the most important founding collections of the municipal library. ... Copies I have been able to identify woud have only formed a fraction of his original collection. Not all René de Bourgneuf's book made it into modern collection of Rennes municipal library and many have been lost or dispersed over the centuries." Malcolm Walsby, The Printed Book in Brittany, p. 177. /// PLUS DE PHOTOS SUR WWW.LATUDE.NET‎

Previous owner's name in contemporary hand to title-page. Small repair to title-page, a few leaves with underlinings in red and a few leaves with a vague dampstain, otherwise a nice and clean copy. ‎Two uncommon works, both first editions, by Pelargus providing explanations and commentary on the Gospels of Matthew and John, respectively. They are both structured in a question-and-answer format and are fine examples of early modern biblical exegesis. Christoph Pelargus (1565–1633) was a German Protestant theologian known for his mediating stance during the religious conflicts of his time. He studied theology at the University of Frankfurt where he became a professor and earned his doctorate in 1589. In 1596, he was appointed General Superintendent of Brandenburg and later became a key figure in the theological faculty at Frankfurt. Pelargus advocated for peaceful coexistence between Lutheran and Reformed confessions.‎
