Première édition "continentale" publiée l'année de l'édition originale (la première traduction française, elle, verra le jour seulement en 1845, dans une version d'Alfred des Essarts). Le troisième grand roman de Dickens fut publié sous forme de feuilleton d'avril 1838 à octobre 1839 ; il connut le même succès immédiat que les Pickwick papers et Oliver Twist, qui l'avaient précédé, mais subit ensuite une éclipse durable qui ne se dissipa qu'au début du XXe siècle.
