This volume, which also draws on novel methodologies of interdisciplinary research and sociological analysis, is an important contribution to our knowledge of medieval and renaissance music in the main towns of Umbria (Assisi, Perugia, Foligno, Spoleto, Todi, Orvieto, Città di Castello, Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino and Spello) - a broad and complex phenomenon that has only recently been reconstructed in any detail. Within this highly composite geographical area, loosely held together by the Church, the study outlines the historical development of musical patronage, examines the role played by individual personalities, institutions and musicians and establishes possible links between these various sources (including abundant iconographical material and contemporary chronicles), this valuable survey focuses specifically on the development of patronage among the more important families, the splendour of certain cathedral chapels, the foundation of academies, the promotion of musical composition and the musicians' labour market. As such it offers a wide-ranging vision that greatly enriches our knowledge of the history of Umbria.
