Thomas Bewick (1753–1828) is best known for his 'History of British Birds', celebrated today primarily for its wood engravings, particularly the small, finely detailed, and often humorous vignettes known as tailpieces. He played a crucial role in advancing illustration printing by adapting metal-engraving tools to cut hard boxwood across the grain. This technique produced durable printing blocks that could be integrated with metal type, allowing for high-quality illustrations at a lower cost. The text of the first volume, Land Birds, was written by Ralph Beilby, while the second volume, Water Birds, was authored by Bewick. All the wood engravings are by Bewick himself. Zimmer p. 57 Nissen IVB, 95 Roscoe 15A.

Spines rubbed and wear on outer ends. Margins of the plates with some faint foxing, two plates with a waterstain at bottom margin, two free endpapers missing, else a good, clean set. Plates were drawn by MacGillivray himself, and mostly show comparative anatomy. A complete natural history of the birds of Great Britain, written in great detail and containing a mass of information on the particulars of avian anatomy, as well as full accounts of the habits and characteristics of each of the species and a great deal of information of a general nature. The system of classification adopted by the author is unusual, but the general discussions and the anatomical descriptions are authoritative.
