Amsterdam: 1642. 20 engraved plates housed in hinged mounts in a blue morocco case. Many of the plates are watermarked with 'VS' and a small crescent, and countermark capital R. Tiny wormhole to title. A closed tear in the margin of plate T has been professionally repaired. Occasional short splits, creases, light markings and toned areas usually not affecting the images. Overall an excellent, clean set with wide margins. Second edition. The complete suite of plates from the influential pattern book Oficina Arcularia, depicting existing Dutch and French designs for furniture engraved by the master Crispin de Passe the Younger, of the extraordinary de Passe family of engravers and publishers. Summary A collaborative investigation of one of the best-known works of late medieval European literature, the Franco-Burgundian collection of short stories known as the Cent Nouvelles nouvelles. Modelled loosely on Boccaccio's Decameron and incorporating elements from Old French fabliaux as well as Poggio Bracciolini's Liber Facetiarum, the anonymous collection attributes its morally challenging and frequently humorous tales to named narrators including Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and Louis of Luxembourg, Count of Saint Pol. The contribution of this new volume of essays is threefold: - empirical, in that it brings entirely new interdisciplinary insights into the study of the genesis and reception of the work; - methodological, in that it integrates study of the text within a 360-degree evaluation of the work's manuscript and early printed context; and - conceptual, in that it seeks to understand the social dimensions of textual production and consumption. These approaches unite ten principal contributions by specialists in the fields of art history, book history, court history and linguistics from France, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK. Edmond Malassis, né en 1874 (mort en 1940), était élève du peintre Gustave Moreau. Aquarelliste renommé ayant richement illustré de nombreux ouvrages pour les bibliophiles, il a laissé un nombre important d'exemplaires ornés d'aquarelles originales. Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles sont une de ses plus belles illustrations. Les 16 hors-texte sont de véritables petits tableaux fourmillant de détails pouvant servir à l'histoire du costume et du moyen-âge. Le tout servit par un humour efficace teinté d'érotisme paillard. Les Cent Nouvelles nouvelles, dites du roi Louis XI, recueil de contes, composés de 1456 à 1461 à la cour du duc de Bourgogne Philippe le Bon, pendant le séjour que fit au château de Genappe le dauphin Louis, fils de Charles VII. Pour distraire les ennuis de l'exil du dauphin, chaque seigneur à son tour faisait un joyeux récit; dans l'édition publiée en 1486 par Ant. Vérard, les Nouvelles portent les noms de ceux qui les contèrent, et celles qui sont attribuées à Monseigneur, sans autre désignation, appartiennent, dit l'éditeur, au dauphin lui-même. Un secrétaire, ajoute la tradition, recueillit et rédigea ces histoires qui égayaient la cour de Bourgogne s'accorde, en effet, à reconnaître aux Cent nouvelles nouvelles un auteur unique, qui recueillit sans doute ses matériaux dans les réunions de Genappe, mais qui donna au livre sa forme et son style. A n'en pas douter, cet auteur est Antoine de La Sale, à qui l'on doit encore Les quinze joyes du mariage et l'Histoire du petit Jehan de Saintré. Il demeurait à Genappe, et son nom figure dans le recueil même, où se trouvent d'ailleurs les formes de pensée et de style particulières à ses autres ouvrages.
