The Trinity and Creation are central themes in the theology of the Augustinian Canons of the Abbey of St Victor during its time of greatest flourishing in the twelfth century. In this volume, three of the most important Victorine theological works are introduced and completely translated into English for the first time: On the Three Days, by Hugh of St. Victor (d. 1141), a lyrical yet philosophical study of how the power, wisdom, and goodness of God can be known from the things God has made; Hugh?s Sentences on Divinity, lecture notes which show how the divine ideas (?primordial causes?) serve God in creation; and On the Trinity, by Richard of St. Victor (d. 1173), one of the enduring classics of Christian theology, which analyzes the Trinity in terms of love. The version of the Rule of St Augustine used at the Abbey of St Victor began with the command to love God above all things and one?s neighbor as oneself. Not surprisingly, then, love was a pervasive theme in the writings produced there, many of which are introduced and translated here : (1) five lyrical essays by Hugh of St Victor (d. 1141): ThePraise of Charity; The Betrothal Gift of the Soul; In Praise of the Spouse; On the Substance of Love; What Truly Should Be Loved ?; (2) On the Four Degrees of Violent Love, by Richard of St Victor (d. 1173), which traces the likenesses and differences between romantic love and the love of God; (3) Achard of St Victor (d. 1170), Sermon 5 and two of Adam of St Victor?s sequences are examples of how these authors wove love into their writings ; (4) excerpts from the Microcosmus by Godfrey of St Victor (d. ca. 1195), summarize the central place of love in his humanistic theological anthropology.

Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. He was a regular canon of the Parisian abbey of St Victor, founded in 1108, which in the twelfth century had developed into a prestigious center of spiritual learning, closely connected to the nascent university in Paris. Because of his frequent use of Jewish exegetical materials, Andrew's commentaries are a rich source for the history both of biblical hermeneutics and of inter-religious dialogue during the Middle Ages. His Isaiah commentary caused outrage among medieval Christian scholars because it eschewed traditional christological interpretations, and instead offered a reading "according to the Hebrew." This translation makes this work accessible in English for the first time. The source text of this volume was published in 2021 by Frans van Liere (Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis, 53C). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. Victor Horta is een naam die klinkt als een klok. Hij is niet alleen bekend bij kunsthistorici en architecten, maar ook bij het grote publiek al was het maar omdat zijn portret ooit een bankbiljet sierde. De befaamde Belgische architect drukte zijn stempel op de architectuur van de twintigste eeuw. Het huis dat hij in Brussel voor Emile Tassel bouwde, wordt vaak beschouwd als de eerste woning in art nouveau stijl. Hiermee wees hij de weg naar een eigentijdse architectuur die onder meer gekenmerkt werd door een onstuitbare vernieuwingsdrang. In dit rijk geillustreerde boek schetst Michele Goslar een uniek beeld van Victor Horta op basis van zijn ontwerpen en van gegevens over zijn priveleven en werpt zo een nieuw licht op het karakter van de architect waarover tot nog toe weinig bekend was. Hoewel dit boek in de eerste plaats een biografie is, komen ook nieuwe bevindingen op kunsthistorisch en architecturaal vlak aan bod. Het leven en het werk van de geniale architect die Victor Horta was, wordt hier op een chronologische manier benaderd. De tekst wordt verrijkt met zeshonderd illustraties die de lezer een uitzonderlijk beeld geven van het leven en het werk van de architect. Deze biografie geeft niet alleen voor het eerst een volledig overzicht van de ontwerpen van Horta, ze schetst ook een totaalbeeld van het leven van de architect, dat tot nog toe alleen fragmentarisch bekend was. Dit voegt een reele meerwaarde toe, omdat het meer inzicht verschaft in de totaliteit van het oeuvre. Mijn ster was getaand, maar niet mijn architectuur, denk ik, stelde Horta in 1939, toen hij zijn Memoires schreef, met gemengde gevoelens vast. Zijn architectuur is inderdaad niet gereduceerd tot een voetnoot in de geschiedenis, integendeel. Sinds 2000 worden vier van de door hem ontworpen woningen Tassel, Solvay, Van Eetvelde en zijn eigen woning door de Unesco erkend als werelderfgoed. Dit eerbetoon op zich volstaat al om de ster van Horta te doen schijnen. Deze biografie zal haar nog meer glans geven.
