Fragments sur l'Inde, et sur le Général F N.p. (Paris?): 1773. (4)162 8vo, 19th-century hcalf (a trifle rubbed).A rare edition, probably printed in Paris on paper from Rouen; a paginary reprint of the Geneva first edition published earlier the same year, but omitting a final section on the Verron trial. This is one of many works written by Voltaire at Ferney in his eightieth year. His object was an analysis of the French presence in India, in particular the events leading up to the execution of General Lally after the loss of Pondicherry to the British in 1761. Voltaire's interest in the affair arose from his sense of the injustices inherent in French criminal procedure. Lally was tried five years after the fact, on vague charges which hinted darkly at treason; but he was in truth a scapegoat for mismanagement and the loss of colonial power. The case of the comte de Morangiés, which occupies pp. 163-184, is unrelated, but also involves the inadequacies of the French legal system; the issue in that case was the custom of pre-trial imprisonment, which extended to cases of all kinds and made it difficult for an accused to defend himself - texte en bon état sauf l4/6 première feuilles manque sur un coin- La Nouvelle Clémentine ou Lettres de Henriette de Berville -LEONARD Nicolas Germain - né à la Guadeloupe en 1744 - N.p. ‎Ritsart Gobyn Reclining Fragments‎

‎, Posture Editions Nr 52, 2023 HB, 297 x 210 mm, 240 pages, Illustrated. EN-NL edition. ISBN 9789491262579.‎

‎Reclining Fragments, Ritsart Gobyn's second book is the sequel to In Between and, as if by some miracle, thus completes the sentence: 'In Between Reclining Fragments'. Where In Between still hesitated between indicating place or time, the complete sentence 'In Between Reclining Fragments' seems to indicate a place: somewhere between reclining fragments. But in the conversation between Ritsart and Maarten Inghels - the author of the text accompanying the book - it is again emphatically about time: "'As you move closer and distance yourself again, a passage of time is created,' you said. 'That back-and-forth movement of your perception makes it interesting.'" The book forms the second volume on the artist's work and contains almost all the works the artist made from late 2020 to mid-2023, including the room views of 'Prologue', the exhibition at PLUS-ONE gallery, where the book will be introduced. Consistently, Ritsart continues to build an evocative and tactile oeuvre in which he increasingly challenges the viewer's perception and causes the gaze to slow down. More than in the first book - with works from 2017 to 2020 - the artist incorporates fragments/citations of other artists into his paintings, raising the question of what motivations preceded that choice. Does Ritsart neutralise the works of grandmasters by painting them alongside tape, paper scraps and dirty footprints, or does he instead pay homage to his pictorial heroes? Is there a truth to be found here, somewhere among the backward sloping scraps?‎

‎Flanders, Vol. 5: Medium-Sized Panels and Fragments of Large Stained-Glass Windows‎

‎, Brepols 2021, 2021 Hardcover, XVI+ 704 pages., 500 col. ills, 215 x 280 mm, English, , . ISBN 9782503593821.‎

‎This volume refers to medium-sized panels and fragments of stained-glass windows from the Middle Ages up to the end of the 18th century, found in public buildings, churches, museums and private collections in the present five provinces of Flanders (Belgium). The present volume contains the panels and fragments encountered and researched by the authors since they started their research more than thirty years ago. Many of these panels and fragments are totally unknown to the public as they have never been displayed, nor published. Nevertheless they demonstrate an important aspect of stained-glass production and stained-glass conservation. Where large windows in churches are well known to the public, it is often forgotten that even more stained glass was created for dwellings of the noble or patricians, house chapels, guild rooms, smaller spaces in abbeys, etc. It also became clear that virtually no glass was thrown away and larger fragments and panes were recycled as ?stop gaps? or integrated in composite panels, the so called ?vitraux d?antiquaires?. Furthermore archaeological sites nearly always reveal quite small pieces of glass, which could not be used for repairs or as ?cullet? in the glass production cycle. A selection of these archaeological finds is also presented in this volume. At the end of this volume ?Addenda? to the previous volumes are also added.‎
