(elle parut en 30 livraisons hebdomadaires, ici réunies). Infimes rousseurs éparses ; bon exemplaire. Très rare.
Jean Bruno est le pseudonyme de Jean Vaucheret (1844-1899). Originaire de Pontarlier, il fut une figure de la mouvance républicaine libertaire. Fortuné Méaulle fut un graveur réputé (son travail dans ce livre - bien qu'il s'agisse d'une publication populaire à bon marché - est d'ailleurs d'une grande finesse). La plupart des vignettes illustrant ce roman devaient à l'origine servir au catalogue d'une exposition de Gustave Courbet - annulée pour cause d'incarcération du peintre à Sainte-Pélagie en 1872. On reconnaît plusieurs tableaux de Courbet dans les vignettes gravées par Méaulle (autoportraits, vues d'Ornans, " La Femme au Perroquet ", " Bonjour Monsieur Courbet ", " La Sieste pendant la saison des foins ", " La Femme au gant ", etc.). L'action du roman se situe en Franche-Comté. Courbet lui-même y apparaît dans son propre rôle : " "- Vous connaissez ce voyageur ? C'est Courbet, le célèbre peintre d'Ornans. - Je suis enchanté de cette rencontre ; depuis longtemps je désirais le voir. - Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet, permettez-moi de vous présenter M. Morsand, journaliste de talent, républicain éprouvé, et de plus mon ami, qui désire beaucoup faire votre connaissance." Courbet donna une chaleureuse poignée de main aux deux compagnons, puis la conversation s'engagea. Ce catalogue fut tiré à 1.000 exemplaires au début d'avril 1919 ; face au succès, un second tirage de 1.000 exemplaires fut réalisé au cours du même mois - notre exemplaire est un de ceux-ci.
