Philipp Houben (1767 - 1855), un notaire de Xanten en Basse Hesse consacrait tous ses loisirs à l’archéologie, une science à laquelle il s’était initié en autodidacte grâce à sa rencontre avec le pasteur Johannes Spenrath. Nous lui devons les fouilles des sites romains de Xanten et ses environs, en particulier la Colonia Ulpia Traiana et le camp de Castra Vetera, des sites qui offrent, à l’instar de Nîmes et d’Anvers, de nombreux vestiges attestant d’un culte priapique. La cité et le camp romains ont été en grande partie reconstruits au XXe siècle pour former le musée et le parc archéologique de Xanten où des fouilles sont toujours en cours. Houben fut l’un des premiers archéologues à documenter ses découvertes au moyen de dessins fort précis. 4 planches contiennent 31 figures en couleurs, la cinquième montre une collection de lampes à huile et de pièces de vaisselle. Ces illustrations représentent les pièces érotiques du cabinet qu’Houben s’était constitué au cours de ses fouilles. Sa collection fut dispersée après sa mort. Les planches sont accompagnées d’un texte du savant Franz Fiedler. Mouillures restaurées à la couverture, un angle de la page de titre réparé, l’ouvrage a été soigneusement établi dans un cartonnage moderne.
