‎Edition originale tirée à 535 exemplaires sur vergé de Navarre, un des 500 après 30 hors-commerce, avec un portrait d'Eluard en Frontispice par Max Ernst. Paul Eluard avait épousé Gala pendant la Première guerre mondiale, au lendemain de laquelle il se lie d'amitiés avec Max Ernst qui illustre plusieurs recueils du poète. De 1921 à 1924 le couple Eluard fait ménage à trois avec Max Ernst, mais Eluard le vit très mal et livre dans "Mourir de ne pas mourir" le témoignage poignant du supplice que furent ces années. ‎
