‎<p><meta charset="utf-8">L’exposition Art et diplomatie. Les œuvres japonaises du Château de Fontainebleau (1862- 1864) sera inaugurée dans les salles du château lors du Festival de l’histoire de l’art le 5 juin 2021 et restera visible jusqu’au 6 juillet 2021. Elle présentera au public des cadeaux diplomatiques offerts par l’avant-dernier Shôgun Iemochi à Napoléon III, lors de deux ambassades japonaises en 1862 et 1864. Un temps exposé et admiré, cet ensemble d’œuvres d’art a par la suite été rangé dans les réserves du château et progressivement oublié. L’exposition sera l’occasion de les redécouvrir.<span data-mce-fragment="1"></span><br data-mce-fragment="1"><br data-mce-fragment="1"><span data-mce-fragment="1">Les ambassades itinérantes de 1862 et 1864 avaient pour ambition de sonder les intentions des gouvernements européens et de tenter de renégocier les traités dits inégaux qui venaient d’être signés à la suite de l’ouverture forcée du Japon par le Commodore Perry en 1854. Le Japon, par son inscription dans le monde sinisé, avait une grande expérience de l’art d’offrir des cadeaux. C’est donc en s’appuyant sur cette tradition qu’il envoie en France des peintures, des objets en laque et dans d’autres matières. Les archives diplomatiques japonaises nous renseignent sur le soin qui a présidé au choix des œuvres et sur le processus de fabrication et comment elles ont parfois été adaptées au goût occidental. Ces présents doivent avant tout permettre au Japon de manifester son prestige sur la scène internationale. Mais leur présence au Château de Fontainebleau s’inscrit aussi dans la grande tradition du goût des élites européennes pour l’art de l’Asie orientale, à la veille de l’éclosion du japonisme.</span><br data-mce-fragment="1"><br data-mce-fragment="1">À la croisée de deux univers, cette exposition donne ainsi vie à un ensemble d’œuvres au statut particulier, situées à une période de transition où le Japon fait ses premiers pas sur la scène internationale.
