Editions de l'Oeil 1956. Fort in-4 broché non paginé au format 19 x 25 cm. Couverture rempliée ornée d'un collage inédit tiré en lithographie de Max Ernst. Dos carré, légèrement insolé, avec petite auréole au bas, qui se répercute légèrement sur le mors. Plats et intérieur frais, malgré deux minuscules taches sur la tranche extérieure, dont une qui bave un peu sur le bord d'une page. Préface inédite d'André Breton pour ce délirant roman surréaliste de Max Ernst, narré sous forme de collages, légendés. Très bel état général, malgré les défauts indiqués. Tirage unique à 1000 exemplaires numérotés ( n° 224 ). Rare nouvelle édition.

Bradel de maroquin noir grain long à encadrement, titre doré au dos, premier plat orné d'une radiographie sous mica, tête dorée, couvertures conservées, emboîtage (reliure signée de Loutrel). Édition originale. Un des 900 exemplaires sur papier vélin teinté (n° 237). Préface d’André Breton, présentant les 146 collages par Max Ernst.
« Si c’est la plume qui fait le plumage, ce n’est pas la colle qui fait le collage » : Max Ernst nous livre ici ses premiers collages, empreints d’hallucinations, loin du dadaïsme de ses débuts, où se succèdent des créations poétiques et humoristiques. André Breton y souligne la valeur des coupes (dans les images conventionnelles d’une « histoire ») et les détournements (dans le « déjà vu » ou le « déjà employé ») dont est capable le surréalisme : faire apparaître un monde merveilleux et onirique, irréel et illusoire. Étonnante reliure de Patrick Loutrel, qui a inséré au premier plat une radiographie d’une colonne vertébrale. Restauration angulaire au feuillet de la dernière planche.
