Jean-François Millet a séjourné pendant 3 saisons successives de 1866 à 1867 en Bourbonnais pour y accompagner son épouse qui faisait des cures thermales à Vichy. A l'invitation de l'un de ses amis clermontois, l'avocat Michel-François Chassaing, il visite aussi l'Auvergne et les environs de Vichy ; il fait à cette occasion de nombreux dessins, croquis et pastels. ‎
