‎In the late Middle Ages, in the time of Charles the Bold and Hans Memling, Bruges was a metropolis of books. One of the central figures in this international book trade was Colard Mansion (active from 1457 to 1484). Initially, in addition to being a valued translator, Mansion was primarily a highly sought-after copyist of luxury manuscripts, but when the art of printing made its entree in Europe in 1455, he saw his chance and became one of the first in the Low Countries to specialise in the new medium of printed books. In no time, he became one of the most important book entrepreneurs in Bruges and environs. In this book, manuscripts, illuminated incunabula and rare prints bring Mansion's innovative book business back to life. Nearly fifty specialists from around the world offer unique insights into Mansion's life, many aspects of which are shrouded in mystery. Among other things they describe the gradual transition from manuscript to print, explain workshop practices and publishers' strategies, and provide contextual information about late-medieval printmaking and the creation of an impressive oeuvre of literary editions in the vernacular. De incunabelen uit de Openbare Bibliotheek Brugge en de Bibliotheque nationale de France worden aangevuld met exemplaren uit tal van bibliotheken van over de hele wereld. Nooit eerder werd zo een groot aantal wiegendrukken van Mansion samengebracht. Colard Mansions werk verbindt traditie en vernieuwing en omvat naast drukken, handschriften en miniaturen ook prenten. ‎Paris: chez Louis Janet et l'Auteur, 1823 in-12, 244 pages, joli frontispice dépliant rehaussé en couleurs ("Palette pour les chairs", lithographie de G. Engelmann), 244 pages. Cartonnage d'ép. de papier marbré vert, petites usures, petit manque superficiel de papier sur le 2è plat de couv., qqs rousseurs pâles, autrement bon état. Mansion est un miniaturiste lorrain (1785- vers 1840), élève de son père Jacques Larue lui aussi miniaturiste et d'Isabey. Il peignit habituellement des miniatures sur ivoire de grandes dimensions mais aussi parfois sur vélin, sur carton, sur porcelaine ou sur émail. Ces leçons se présentent sous forme d’une correspondance avec une jeune élève.‎

‎Paris, chez Louis Janet et chez l'auteur, 1823, in-12, 1 pl. dép. en couleurs (aquarelles), broché, couverture imprimée de l'éditeur, ?Deuxième édition (l'édition originale parut sans date, probablement en 1822, à Paris chez Chavant), illustrée d'une très jolie planche dépliante donnant dans des médaillons aquarellés les teintes pour les "chairs". Mansion (1785 - vers 1834) réalisa ses miniatures sur de grands ivoires, carton, vélin mais aussi porcelaine et émail. Il eut une carrière prolifique et enseigna en Angleterre. Suivant un modèle classique, l'artiste transmet ses leçons sous forme d'une correspondance fictive avec un jeune élève. Destiné aux autodidactes, ce petit manuel traite des matériaux, des couleurs, de la manière de polir l'ivoire, des pinceaux, etc... Mansion ne cache pas son admiration pour son maître Isabey , "un homme de génie" (p. 82), dont il décrit le travail. ?
