Istanbul, Nietzsche Hayatý ve Felsefesi, 1329 [1913]. 8vo. In later embossed full cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine. Last 10 leaves with a brown spot. Frontiespiece repaired with tape, otherwise a fine and clean copy. 127, (1) pp. + portrait of Darwin.
Rare first edition of the first book on Darwinism, printed in Istanbul. The work in Ottoman language is a translation of ""Wahrheit und Irrthum im Darwinismus"" (The Truths and Mistakes of Darwinism) by Eduard von Hartmann (1842 - 1906), first published in 1875. The translator Memduh Süleyman, who also commented the book, considered the natural evolution the biggest mistake of the Darwinism. Memduh Süleyman (1889?-1920) was an important author and translator of the last years of the Ottoman Empire. His most famous work is a book on Nietzsche, ""Nietzsche Hayat? ve Felsefesi"", from 1912, which he co-wrote in together with Ahmet Nebil-Baha Tevfik-Memduh.The book was published amidst the Ottoman debate on the Darwinism. The first mentioning of the term was made in 1863 in a magazine Mecmua-i Fünun by Münif Pasha, who was at the time serving as a minister of education and did not believe, that the development of science would or should affect the religion. In the time of the publication of the present work, Darwin's works were not yet translated into Ottoman. The first translation of On the Origin of Species in the Muslim world, was only issued in Arabic in 1918 in Cairo. Translated were only the first six chapters. For more chapters were subsequently added in 1928.OCLC list three institutional examples (Leiden University Library, Library of Congress, Huntington Library, Art Museum, & Botanical Gardens).
S.-Petersburg, 1899 [recte October 1898]. 8vo. Bound in an excellent newer red half morocco in perfect contemporary style, with five raised bands and gilt author and year to spine. Marbled edges and beautiful marbled en-papers. Old owner's stamps to title-page (""Biblioteka Aleksandova, S. 1873 F."", ""Iz knig Avrutina M.V."", and the number ""21162""), otherwise also internally very nice and clean. (4), 290 pp.
Very rare first edition of Lenin's first published book, the seminal miscellany of his economic papers, which constitute the first outline of his revolutionary ideas. The work consists in five economic essays/studies, four of which are published here for the first time (""The Handicraft Census of 1894-95 in Perm Gubernia and General Problems of ""Handicraft"" Industry"""" ""Gems of Narodnik Project-Mongering"""" ""The Heritage We Renounce"" - all three written in exile in 1897 - and ""On the Question of Our Factory Statistics"", written in 1898), and one of which (""A Characterisation of Economic Romanticism"") had been published the previous year, in installments, in the magazine Novoye Slovo, April-July 1897. Before the present publication, only very few of Lenin's papers and articles had been published, and none of them in book form. The present publication brings to light Lenin's elaboration of the tasks of the Russian Marxists (both as to their programme, their tactics, and the organization as such) (""The Heritage We Renounce"") and gives us the basis for his take on Marxism. Much of the original material published here was used by Lenin, both directly (e.g. the ""Handicraft Census"") and indirectly (forming a basis for the work) in his later published book ""The Development of Capitalim in Russia"" (1899), which established his reputation as a Marxist theorist. Furthermore, the present publication constitutes Lenin's earliest economic writings directed against the Narodniks. As a whole, the present publication gives us the first rounded picture of Leninist thought and provides us with the basis for Leninist economics and politics. That which Lenin develops in the present studies and essays forms the basis for the capitalist and Marxist thought that he is later to present and which becomes the standard introduction to the Russian economy for later generations of Marxists. The work is of great scarcity and was presumably printed in very small numbers.

The very scarce first edition of Trotter’s seminal “Essay on Drunkenness”, which constitutes the first book on alcoholism. “It was during the course of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that the problem of chronic alcohol dependence in modern society and its consequent medical effects emerged. The topic of drunkenness figures prominently in the thinking and writing of social reformers, politicians, theorists, medical practitioners, and psychiatrists. Eventually, by the mid-nineteenth century, ‘alcoholism’ was named as the disease of habitual drunkenness. Possibly the most important book to predict this was Trotter’s Essay, written in 1804. Through case studies based on wide experience, he detailed the manifestations of alcoholism, ventured therapeutic recommendations, and squarely termed drunkenness a disease – indeed, a mental disease.” (Routledge, Edt. Roy Porter, 1988) Thomas Trotter (1760 – 1832), Scottish naval physician, was a leading medical reformer in the Royal Navy, also known as an ardent critic of the slave trade. Trotter was a champion of vaccinations for naval medical staff and a key figure in the development of modern theories of alcohol addiction. His groundbreaking “Essay on Drunkenness” from 1804, in which he describes habitual alcohol consumption as a “disease of the mind”, is the first ever book-length consideration of the phenomenon of alcohol dependence and its treatment.
