Jozef Legrand (Niel, 1957) leeft en werkt in Berlijn en Brussel. Als kunstenaar geeft hij vorm aan een ?realiteitsonderzoek? door middel van artistieke acties, interventies, installaties, video?s, foto?s en via opdrachten in de openbare ruimte. Collectieve ficties, objecten en hun geschiedenis en de constructie van identiteit zijn terugkerende thema?s in zijn oeuvre. Daarbij gaat Legrand ervan uit dat deze elementen door persoonlijke achtergronden worden bepaald en dat de ervaring van de realiteit nooit een vaststaand gegeven is, maar altijd onderhevig is aan ontwikkeling. In die zin kenmerkt de kunstpraktijk van Jozef Legrand zich door een grote openheid en meer nog door een uitzonderlijke dienstbaarheid; dat is zelfs een van de kernpunten in zijn artistiek werk. Het kunstwerk maakt altijd en onlosmakelijk deel uit van een groter geheel; het neemt ten volle deel aan de ons omringende wereld. Legrand schakelt kunst in als ?trigger?. De kunstenaar gaat daarbij nooit dwingend te werk. Via uitgekiende presentaties overhaalt hij de toeschouwer met zachte hand om zich te richten op de eigen denkwereld, de eigen persoonlijke geschiedenis. Met zijn werk, zowel in een tentoonstellingscontext als in de publieke ruimte, wil hij allerlei verhalen en bedenkingen bij de kijker losweken en hem bewegen tot een verregaande vorm van participatie en interactie. Jozef Legrand is een van de weinige Belgische kunstenaars die gevraagd werd voor de veelbesproken Documenta X van Catherine David en kent ook in ons land een uitgebreid palmares van artistieke realisaties, vooral dan in de openbare ruimte. De Garage / Cultuurcentrum Mechelen presenteert onder de titel ?Home Sweet Home? een tentoonstelling die een verhelderende en krachtige inkijk wil bieden in het oeuvre van Jozef Legrand. Tegelijk wordt het boek Jozef Legrand, Projects 1989-2009 voorgesteld
