Édition originale, premier tirage, sur papier courant avec les fautes repérées 'effraya' au lieu de 'effraièrent' à la p.5, et 'Scissites' au lieu de 'Syssites' aux pages 251, 368 et 370. Carteret I, p.266. In 8, relié demi-chagrin et toile bleu, délavé et petit accident au pied du dos. Texte avec épidermures légère mais uniforme. Couvertures non conservées. Présence d’un nom à la plume au faux titre ,un certain Numa Brielle ? Exemplaire parfaitement satisfaisant.

In-8, 22x15 cm., [2] ff., 474 pp., [1] f., reliure en semi percaline bleue à dos lisse, nom d'auteur et titre dorés, plats marbrés dans la teinte du dos. Ex-libris Fromentin. Assez bon état, frottements, infimes rousseurs. Agréable exemplaire. Premier tirage sur papier ordinaire de l'édition originale de Salammbô, avec les fautes corrigées dans les tirages suivants, notamment « effraya » pour « effrayèrent » en page 5 ; « Agates » au lieu de « Aegates » page 50 ; et « Scissites » pour « Syssites » en pages 80, 251 et 370. Le second roman de Flaubert se trame dans une Carthage lointaine, puissante et exubérante. Après sa Bovary, Flaubert déconcerte par le choix d'un environnement diamétralement étranger. Il s'isole, voyage, cherche intensément, se dévoue à son roman afin de produire cette prose ciselée qui enchantera tant de lecteurs. Il surprend par son habilité à mêler un long poème mystique et barbare, jouant parfois sur les limites de l'imaginaire de la mode orientalisante, à une intrigue historique extrêmement bien renseignée au vu de la rareté des sources carthaginoises.
