Dernier ouvrage publié du vivant de René Guénon, La Grande Triade se caractérise par un recours prépondérant aux traditions extrême-orientales, particulièrement celles de la Chine et, avant tout, du taoïsme, que l'auteur avait connues et dont il avait traité dès ses premiers écrits. Toutefois, comme à son accoutumée, il y fait aussi de nombreux parallèles et rapprochements avec d'autres traditions, tant orientales qu'occidentales : hindouisme, bouddhisme, judaïsme, islam, christianisme, franc-maçonnerie, hermétisme, pythagorisme, Fidèles d'Amour, etc. De la sorte, La Grande Triade répond clairement au propos constant de René Guénon : exposer les données de la Tradition primordiale, notamment en soulignant les convergences entre toutes les traditions authentiques. Même si, comme il le regrettait, ce livre n'eut d'abord qu'un faible écho, y compris dans les milieux qui se réclamaient de la pensée traditionnelle, l'ouvrage fit progressivement et discrètement son chemin, notamment parmi ceux qu'attirait l'Extrême-Orient.
