Petra Zimmermann occupies a unique position among emerging contemporary jewellery artists: she shares their exciting approach to the subject of jewellery and the quotable adoption of the pop culture label for defining the auteur jewellery concept in which she succeeds, this time through historical reference. The artist draws on past encounters with costume jewellery from the previous century for her rings, bracelets and brooches. Comprised of bright, colourful synthetic forms, these objects receive a framework in which their artificial appearance contrasts to the dusty splendour of the historic costume jewellery. Beguiling pieces of jewellery emerge, which combine the present fascination for glamour with an element of progression, thus referencing the costume jewellery as an essential component in the production and construction of glamour in the portrait photography of the Hollywood diva. In her latest series of works, the artist uses mass media images of models, floral motifs, architecture and design objects which broaden her scope of cultural and social interpretations. Thus behind the visual opulence of her work, she succeeds in handling relevant aesthetic and social themes in her pieces; relevant for a generation that no longer struggles against traditional conventions, but that negotiates much more in an increasingly complex environment in the search for personal and historical coherence.

Belle estampe dessinée par David Roberts, et lithographiée à deux teintes par Louis Haghe. Elle est issue de l'ouvrage The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, from drawings made on the spot by David Roberts, publié entre 1842 et 1849. L'estampe, dessinée sur les lieux le 7 mars 1839, figure la nécropole El Khasne ou "Trésor du Pharaon", l'un des monuments les plus connus de la cité antique de Pétra en Jordanie. Bien que David Roberts ait perçu l'édifice comme un temple, il fut conçu au Ier siècle de notre ère comme un tombeau. On y voit les colonnes brisées du portique ; celles-ci ont aujourd'hui été restaurées. Né à Édimbourg en Écosse en 1796, David Roberts débuta sa carrière artistique comme peintre pour un décorateur local. Son talent se tourna rapidement vers le théâtre et, en 1827, après avoir quitté l'Écosse, il conçut les décors de la première londonienne d'Il Seraglio de Mozart. Après avoir publié les dessins de l'Espagne mauresque qu'il visita entre 1832 et 1833, Roberts accomplit, en 1838, le rêve de sa vie : découvrir l'Égypte et la Terre Sainte. Il séjourna quelques temps à Alexandrie, remonta le Nil, puis visita Petra en Jordanie. Il partit ensuite pour Gaza et Jaffa, arriva à Jérusalem qui venait de subir une épidémie de peste, et parcourut toute la région. Malade, il renonça à visiter le Liban et la Syrie, et retourna à Londres où il confia ses aquarelles au célèbre graveur Louis Haghe, qui créa à partir de son œuvre 272 lithographies, aujourd'hui de renommée internationale.
