''Gilbert Durand, disciple de Bachelard, souhaitait en concevant cet ouvrage compléter anthropologiquement les recherches inaugurées par la "Psychanalyse du feu". Son livre se veut une sorte de « jardin » des images, ordonné comme la botanique de Linné, un répertoire organisé autour de quelques grands schèmes structuraux… Reflet des débats sur le mythe dans les années 1960 (Claude Lévi-Strauss ou Paul Ricoeur), inspiré par Gaston Bachelard, ce maître-livre a ouvert la voie à une école novatrice d’interprétation de l’imagination et de l’imaginaire (le structuralisme figuratif), opposée aux théories formalistes comme à la phénoménologie, se démarquant aussi bien de Sartre que de Barthes. À partir d’une culture encyclopédique, ouverte aux cultures non européennes (des arts aux mythes religieux), il jette les bases d’un « trajet anthropologique » qui éclaire la complexité créatrice de l’imaginaire aussi bien par son ancrage neurobiologique que par ses supports culturels.''
