L'Histoire du Premier Mai de Maurice Dommanget est un ouvrage majeur réalisé sur cette vaste manifestation. Il y développe une réflexion sur les luttes socio-politiques qui ont amené cette date à être la journée internationale des travailleurs à partir de 1889, puis la fête du travail, jour chômé. Ses recherches lui ont permis de nous donner à lire les heures sombres et glorieuses de ces manifestations. Cet ouvrage déroule tout un pan de l'histoire sociale des XIXe et XXe siècles, et plus particulièrement l'épopée des 1er mai que Maurice Dommanget a étudiée jusqu'en 1949. La synthèse qu'il en effectue reste toujours d'actualité : Le 1er mai, qui, pendant soixante ans, a su résister à toutes les bourrasques et a su élargir considérablement le champ de son activité, saura se dépasser en se renouvelant.
