Le XXe siècle consacre le triomphe de la prostitution. Elle accompagne les pionniers d'Amérique ou d'Afrique du Sud, elle nourrit les fantasmes des bourgeois victoriens comme des ouvriers berlinois, elle fait naître le mythe de la traite des blanches avec son cortège de rumeurs, d'antisémitisme et de crimes. La fermeture des maisons closes n'y changera rien. Quant au combat des femmes, des écrivains ou des institutions contre ce phénomène, il est aussi noble que vain, le plus souvent. En dressant, pour la première fois, l'état des lieux de la prostitution mondiale, Jacques Solé arrive en effet à ce constat : la société industrielle engendre une société prostitutionnelle.
