Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1894, in-8, IV-371 pp, Toile rouge à la bradel, pièce de titre noire, petit fleuron sur le dos, couvertures conservées, Édition originale de cet ouvrage, qui fait partie de la série des John Bull de Max O'Rell (1848-1903), journaliste et écrivain français enseignant à la St Paul's School de Londres. John Bull constitue le stéréotype de l'Anglais : le personnage, inventé au XVIIIe siècle par John Arbuthnot, sert à O'Rell pour décrire la société britannique, ses moeurs et son fonctionnement. Ici, il lui permet de dépeindre, avec force sarcasme, les ambitions coloniales et marchandes de l'Empire britannique : "Étudions dont les Anglais dans tous ces pays que vous verrez marqués en rouge sur les cartes du monde qui se publient en Angleterre, ces pays que John Bull a acquis en versant peu de sang et beaucoup de whisky, en convertissant les naturels au christianisme et leur territoire à son profit" (p. 8).
