Edition originale illustrée d'un tableau dépliant et de 2 planches hors-texte représentant des crânes et profils d'aliénés. Texte fondateur de la Psychiatrie, par Pinel, médecin-chef à la Pitié-Salpétrière, dans lequel il montre scientifiquement que l'aliénation mentale est une maladie réclamant un traitement particulier. Il est le premier à faire détacher les "fous" et à arrêter de leur pratiquer la saignée.
