On ne présente plus Eugène Atget (1857-1927), le célèbre photographe autodidacte qui immortalisa le « Vieux Paris » au tournant du XXe siècle. Pourtant cet ouvrage aborde l'homme et l'artiste sous un jour inédit. Il relate ses liens avec Libourne, sa ville natale. Il laisse la parole à des photographes actuels qui éclairent le lecteur sur la fascination qu'exerce encore aujourd'hui ce personnage. En même temps, le néophyte y trouvera les repères historiques indispensables pour mesurer l'ampleur de son entreprise : en un peu plus de trente ans, Atget a capturé près de dix mille images dans une démarche documentaire, d'inventaire même. Mais ses clichés témoignent également d'une sensibilité et d'une poésie toutes particulières. C'est le sujet de l'exposition « Eugène Atget, poète photographe » à l'origine de ce livre, organisée par le musée des Beaux-Arts de Libourne avec la collaboration exceptionnelle du musée Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris, Paris Musées.
