"Pas plus qu'il n'a voulu confiner Montaigne dans sa tour et sa librairie, ou enfermer Mauriac dans les replis du cœur et de l'âme de Thérèse, Jean Lacouture ne se résigne à confondre Montesquieu avec un livre, si grand soit-il. Ce gentilhomme d'Aquitaine, épistolier persan et familier des Grâces de Chantilly, fut aussi l'un des inventeurs de ce siècle qui, de Marivaux à Watteau, a donné au monde l'exemple d'un art de vivre hors de la pesanteur. Et ce viticulteur gascon n'a pas seulement contribué à l'épanouissement du grand bordeaux, œuvre d'art qui n'a pas fini de nous enchanter, il a su faire de cette merveille le trait d'union avec une société anglaise faite non seulement de consommateurs exigeants, ruais aussi d'inventeurs d'une société plus libre. Ainsi Jean Lacouture peut-il faire valoir que, si les lois ont un " esprit " qui doit tendre à l'harmonie sociale, la vie de Montesquieu fut en quelque sorte une vendange de la liberté."
