Né le 9 juin 1889 à Trentemoult, Georges Aubin avait embarqué à 14 ans comme mousse sur le trois-mâts Saint Jean et effectué une campagne de 28 mois autour du monde. En 1906, ayant suivi les cours de l'hydro de Nantes, il avait embarqué comme élève officier sur le trois-mâts barque Babin Chevaye, puis comme lieutenant sur le vapeur Loire, transport des forçats. Il navigua aussi sur Beaumarchais et Geneviève Molinos. Capitaine au long cours en 1913, il embarqua à 25 ans comme commandant du vapeur Marguerite III sur lequel il demeura pendant toute la guerre, livrant en 1916 un brillant combat contre l'U 63. Sorti indemne du conflit, il fera naufrage avec Marguerite le 23 janvier 1919, en mer d'Irlande, vers Fleetwood lors d'une terrible tempête. Malgré des conditions épouvantables, il parviendra à sauver tout son équipage. Plus tard, Georges Aubin deviendra l'un de nos grands écrivains maritimes.
