C'était, l'un des derniers grands représentants d'une tradition humaniste française,l' Auteur célèbre depuis son prix Goncourt (1918), puis par ses deux monumentaux cycles romanesques Vie et aventures de Salavin et Chronique du Pasquier, livre dans Le Prince Jaffar (1924), une chronique tunisienne d'une grande vérité.
