Édition originale de cette importante source sur l'histoire politique et mondaine de l'Angleterre du XIXe siècle.En dépit des indignations qu'elles suscitèrent à leur sortie, ces "indiscrétions" livrent un témoignage de premier plan sur les règnes de Georges IV, Guillaume IV et Victoria (jusqu'en 1860) : Charles Greville (1794-1865), entré au poste de greffier ordinaire du Conseil (clerk of the Council in ordinary) en 1821, conserva cette fonction pendant près de quarante ans, jusqu'à sa retraite en 1859 ; bien qu'aucune fonction politique ou confidentielle ne soit attachée à cette fonction, elle le conduisit à avoir des relations habituelles avec les chefs de tous les partis de l'État.
