Tous deux porphyrogénètes, tous deux fils et héritiers d'un empereur régnant qui avait su forcer le destin et conquérir son trône, Napoléon, François, Joseph, Charles (1811-1832), fils de Napoléon Ier et de Marie-Louise, et Napoléon, Eugène, Louis, Jean, Joseph (1856-1879), fils de Napoléon III et d'Eugénie, ont connu, l'un comme l'autre, les années d'exaltation et d'espérance avant de terminer une vie assombrie par la chute du régime qui les avait vu naître, par l'exil imposé, par la lancinante interrogation sur leur propre destinée. La pourpre, ce fut pour l'un, très éphémère Napoléon II, en 1814, trois courtes années à la Cour de son père, pour l'autre, tout aussi théorique Napoléon IV, en 1873, une jeunesse passée comme héritier du trône, avant que la catastrophe ne le forçât à l'exil. — Ce luxueux catalogue a été édité à l'occasion de l'exposition La Pourpre et l'exil au Musée national du château de Compiègne du 25 novembre 2004 au 7 mars 2005.
