Grand in-quarto (239 X 286) demi-chagrin rouge, dos cinq nerfs filetés, caissons dorés ornés aux petits fers, titre doré, tête marbrée (reliure de l'époque) ; (2) ff. de faux-titre et titre, CLXXVII [177] pages d'introduction, 590 pages. Rousseurs éparses, plus marquées notamment aux premiers feuillets, léger manque de papier habilement reteinté au second plat.
EDITION ORIGINALE de la publication intégrale de ces mémoires manuscrits. Nicolas-Joseph FOUCAULT (1643-1721) fut intendant de Louis XIV pendant 32 années consécutives, de 1674 à 1706, à Montauban, Pau, Poitiers et Caen. Fils lui-même d'un conseiller d'état, il fut l'ami et la "créature" de Colbert. Ses mémoires renferment, sur les régions qu'il a administrées, notamment sur les conséquences de la révocation de l'édit de Nantes, les renseignements les plus précieux. Ils constituent enfin un appendice qui complètera heureusement la "Correspondance administrative sous le règne de Louis XIV", publiée par M. Depping. Ces mémoires, qui commencent par une rapide autobiographie, débutent véritablement en 1674 pour prendre fin en 1719. Bibliophile et collectionneur passionné, Nicolas-Joseph Foucault avait réuni une bibliothèque d’une exceptionnelle richesse. Bien avant sa mort, sa collection, qui contenait un grand nombre de manuscrits, avait été dispersée, au moins en partie. Outre les livres imprimés, la bibliothèque de l'Arsenal a recueilli près de trente-six volumes manuscrits.
