La condamnation de Louis XVI le 17 janvier 1793. — "16 janvier 1793. Sept heures du soir. On allume les lanternes pour éclairer la salle du Manège, aux Tuileries, et Barrère, qui préside, annonce aux députés : la Convention nationale va maintenant se prononcer par appel nominal sur la peine qu'il faut infliger à Louis Capet. 721 Conventionnels, sur 749, vont se succéder à la tribune et se prononcer sur le sort de Louis XVI, déjà reconnu coupable de haute trahison. La mort immédiate, avec Robespierre, Marat, Saint Just ? L'indulgence, avec Daunou ? Le sursis, proposé par Mailhe pour sauver le Roi ? Le débat le plus dramatique de l'histoire va durer 36 heures sans interruption. Et l'incertitude demeurera jusqu'aux dernier votant.
