C'est oublier qu'à l'époque personne n'avait la moindre idée de l'Amérique et qu'il fallut un demi-siècle pour que l'on prenne conscience de l'importance et de l'immensité de ce continent. Cette même année, en Europe, Grenade est redevenue chrétienne ; la Bretagne est mariée à la France ; à Florence, Laurent le Magnifique se meurt. Ailleurs, la traite des Noirs menace déjà l'Afrique tandis que la Chine se referme sur elle-même. En distinguant le temps vécu par les hommes de 1492 et le temps recréé par l'histoire, cet ouvrage novateur nous permet de réaliser l'ampleur et l'impact des événements de cette année charnière, tout en rendant un hommage mérité au grand explorateur génois.
