Ce roman est le récit de la vie d'un homme du Sud, catholique, engagé dans une lutte sans issue mais dont l'espoir est chevillé au corps. Il est confronté à l'invasion de son pays par les chevaliers du Nord et par la compassion, attisée par son amour pour une jeune fille, pour ses compatriotesattirés par l'hérésie cathare. Troisième volet de sa trilogie sur les cathares après ˮLe bûcher de Montségurˮ (1959) et ˮLes brulésˮ (1960). Toutefois, ce livre peut se lire indépendamment des deux autres. L'auteur s'est pris de passion pour l'aventure des Cathares et nous donne ainsi un magnifique roman montrant parfaitement la lutte entre un ˮNordˮ, dur et intransigeant, et un ˮSudˮ pluslaxiste et tolérant.
