Londres [Leipzig ?], 1784. 2 tomes 1 vol. petit in-8°, veau fauve marbrée dos à nerfs orné de fleurons dorés à la fleur de grenade, pièce de titre en basane blonde, encadrement d'un filet et de dents-de-rat à froid sur les plats, roulette dorée sur les coupes, tranches rouges. Reliure de l'époque, petite attaque de ver à une encoche de coiffe, qq. trous de vers au plat inf. Agréable exemplaire. (2) ff., 277 pp., (1) f. blanc; (2) ff., 206 pp. Quelques rousseurs et quelques petites mouillures.
Edition peu commune de ce "livre très peu connu renfermant sur les hommes du temps des détails qui ne se trouvent que là" (Goncourt). Empruntant à Fontenelle de façon détournée la forme des Dialogues des Morts, l'auteur distille au fil de ces dialogues fictifs plein d'humour et de mots d'esprit, des pensées impertinentes mais profondes sur un ton badin sur la société, l'économie et la politique de l'époque de Louis XV, avec des allusions très claires à celle de Louis XVI. Le texte est enrichi de notes en bas de page qui développent la pensée de l'auteur. Très curieux. Conlon, 84:244; Bibliothèque des Concourt (1897), n°766.
