Il est des hommes qui dominent les époques de l'Histoire, dans une atmosphère de légende. Tel est le cas de celui qui fut cardinal de l'Eglise romaine dès 1622, puis principal ministre du roi de France Louis XIII, en 1624. Un personnage craint et haï de son vivant, au point de devenir une énigme qui continue, cinq siècles plus tard, de nous fasciner. Prêtre et homme d'épée, dévoué "corps et âme" à Dieu comme au roi, à la défense du catholicisme comme à celle de l'unité de la France, Richelieu (1585-1642) reste, avec Clemenceau et de Gaulle, une des références essentielles de notre histoire nationale dont il a, comme le Père la Victoire et l'homme du 18 Juin, profondément contribué à infléchir le cours. Dans sa biographie, qui fait autorité depuis sa parution en 1992, Roland Mousnier brosse un portrait juste et sans concession de celui qu'un autre ecclésiastique, le cardinal de Retz, appelait "l'âpre et redoutable Richelieu" et qui a inspiré aussi bien les historiens que les romanciers.
