The present edition provides the text of Ramon Llull's Liber disputationis Petri et Raimundi sive Phantasticus (CCCM LXXVIII - ROL XVI, pp. 1-30) and Liber de civitate mundi (ROL II, pp. 169-201) with a facing Catalan translation. Accompanied by an introduction, notes on the text, and an index, this volume aims to make Llull's idiosyncratic Latin prose accessible to a broad readership. In his two dialogues Ramon Llull adopts the guise of a fictional character and speaks of himself halfway between apologia and self-promotion. By the time Llull wrote the Fantastic (1311) and the Llibre de la ciutat del mon (1313), he had spent some fifty years writing books of all kinds and attempting to raise financial support for the mission to promote love and service of the true God. The choice of the dialogue form makes the text taut and incisive and Llull seeks a lively line of argumentation. Commanding the dialectical tools provided by the Art and displaying austere rhetorical wisdom, Llull handles references to motifs from the literary tradition as well as from the politics and society of his time. Both pieces are part of Llull's ? new? literature: autobiography, disputation, personification and allegory are all instruments of truth, as subservient to Llull's Art as philosophy was to theology for Llull himself and for many other thirteenth- and fourteenth-century thinkers.
