"Peintre de l’étrange, Johann Heinrich Füssli (1741-1825), d’origine suisse mais londonien d’adoption, laisse derrière lui une œuvre saisissante conjuguant le sublime, le mystère et le fantastique. Fils d’un père peintre et historien de l’art, Johann Heinrich Füssli suit une formation de prêtre et commence une carrière artistique assez tardivement, lors d’un premier voyage à Londres, sous l’influence de Sir Joshua Reynolds, président de la Royal Academy. Après un long séjour en Italie, au cours duquel il est fasciné notamment par la puissance des compositions de Michel-Ange, il revient s’installer à Londres à la fin des années 1770. Artiste atypique et intellectuel, Füssli puise son inspiration dans les sources littéraires qu’il passe au filtre de son imagination. Il développe dans sa peinture un langage onirique et dramatique, où se côtoient sans cesse le merveilleux et le fantastique, le sublime et le grotesque. Organisée thématiquement, l’exposition explore l’ensemble de l’œuvre de Füssli à laquelle aucune exposition monographique n’avait été consacrée à Paris depuis 1975. Elle s’ouvre sur la représentation du théâtre shakespearien, en particulier de Macbeth, puis elle s’attache aux récits mythologiques et bibliques avant de se pencher sur la figure féminine dans son œuvre graphique. Se succèdent enfin les thèmes du cauchemar, véritable création füsslienne, puis du rêve et des apparitions."

‘Das Schloss Wurp oder Wulp bey Itschnen in dem Küsnachter Berg dem Frei Herren von Regensberg zuständig ward von den Zürcher unter Anführung Graaff Rodolph von Habsburg eingenommen und zerstört’. Von J. Melchior Füssli ad nat: del: et Sculpsit.is.
1717, 22x27.5 cm, 1 Blatt Original-Kupferstich, sehr schöner klarer Abzug, Einzelblatt (Blattgr. 23.5x34 cm).
Die legendäre Zerstörung der Wulp regte im 18. Jahrhundert die Fantasie der Künstler an. Ein Beispiel dafür ist eine dramatische Darstellung von Johann Melchior Füssli, die am Neujahrstag 1717 erschien. Es zeigt die Wulp als grossen Gebäudekomplex, der soeben vom abziehenden Grafen Rudolf von Habsburg und seiner Mannschaft zerstört wurde. Nach ihrer Zerstörung oder Aufgabe um 1270 verfiel die Burg. Heinrich Zeller-Werdmüller berichtete 1895, dass er von der Burg nichts mehr gesehen habe, dass aber 50 Jahre zuvor noch ansehnliche Trümmer des Turmes zu sehen gewesen sein sollen. (Wikipedia).
