Cadet d’une famille de trois fils, Chu Teh-Chun entre, en 1935, à l’École des Beaux-Arts de Hangzhou, dirigée par Lin Fongmien. En dehors des cours, il exécute plus de cinq cents aquarelles des paysages du lac de l’Ouest et passe ses soirées à peindre selon le style traditionnel avec l’intention de s’y consacrer entièrement.
