Ouvrage fouillé et soigneusement illustré, pendant de l'exposition organisée à Bruges en 2002 sur les relations entre les primitifs flamands et les peintres d'Europe méridionale (France, Italie, Espagne, Portugal). Les uns vivent l'âge d'or de la peinture à l'huile, les autres celui de la Renaissance. Italie et Flandres, en particulier, vivent une période faste économiquement qui se traduit sur le plan culturel et artistique par une intensité et une richesse, d'autant que des échanges ont lieu. Les flamands transmettent aux italiens la perspective linéaire, ces derniers leur transmettant la grâce des formes et les sens de la composition. Catalogue des oeuvres exposées, p. 226-271. Jan Van Eyck (1390?-1441) : peintre primitif flamand (Belgique), attaché à la cour de Bourgogne. Notablement actif durant les décénies 1420 et 1430. Oeuvres majeures : Les époux Arnolfini, L'homme au turban rouge, La Vierge au Chancelier Rolin.
