Op 19 april 1943 vertrekt vanuit de Dossinkazerne in Mechelen het XXste transport met 1636 Joodse mannen, vrouwen en kinderen richting Auschwitz. Gewapend met een revolver, een stormlamp en rood zijdepapier slagen drie jonge mannen erin de trein te doen stoppen tussen Boortmeerbeek en Haacht en zeventien gevangenen te bevrijden. Die reddingsoperatie van George Livschitz, Robert Maistriau en Jean Franklemon is uniek in de geschiedenis van de Holocaust en staat nagenoeg in elk boek over de judeocide vermeld. Nog voor de trein de Belgische grens bereikt, weten meer dan tweehonderd gevangenen uit het transport te ontsnappen. een aantal van hen wordt neergeschoten, anderen opnieuw door de nazi's aangehouden. Maar de meesten ontkomen aan het gruwelijke lot dat hen in Auschwitz te wachten stond. Het XXste transport naar Auschwitz beschrijft de ontsnappingen uit het XXste transport, maar schetst ook uitgebreid hoe het transport samengesteld werd en wat de overgrote meerderheid van de gedeporteerden te wachten stond. Wie in staat was om te werken, had een kleine kans om te overleven. De anderen werden vermoord in de gasovens of via medische experimenten. De talloze getuigenissen in het boek confronteren de lezer met de raciale vernietigingsdrang van de nazi's en tonen hoe sommigen er met de hulp van anderen of op eigen houtje aan wisten te ontsnappen.
