‎Ptolemy's Cosmology in Greek and Arabic. The Background and Legacy of the Planetary Hypotheses‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 479 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:10 b/w, 4 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Arabic.* NEW ISBN 9782503607177.‎

‎Summary Ptolemy's Almagest (2nd century AD) is the most influential work of ancient and medieval astronomy. This work, however, does not tell us the full story about its author's views of the heavens. After completing the Almagest, Ptolemy turned his attention to a physical investigation of celestial motions. The result is the Planetary Hypotheses, a bold attempt to provide a celestial physics that coheres with the mathematical account of astronomical observations in his Almagest. This book provides the first complete critical edition and English translation of the Arabic version of the Planetary Hypotheses, which is lost for the most part in its original Greek. It furthermore provides an extensive commentary on the whole work, which situates the Planetary Hypotheses within the context of its time and investigates philosophical ideas central to the work. These include the epistemic value of mathematics relative to natural philosophy, and the shape, number, and dynamics of the celestial bodies. The book also investigates the influence of the Planetary Hypotheses on a wide range of medieval Arabic astronomical and philosophical works from the 9th to the 13th century AD. The upshot is to establish the Planetary Hypotheses as a crucial text for understanding the history of philosophy and science from Greek antiquity to the Arabic Middle Ages TABLE OF CONTENTS I Introduction II Astronomy, Natural Philosophy, and the Physical Reality of the Celestial Bodies III The Dynamics of Celestial Motions IV Conclusion V The Arabic Version of the Planetary Hypotheses: Edition and Translation VI Commentary Glossary Bibliography Index‎

1 vol. 4to (250 x 165 mm.) with : [4] ff. (false title, title, dedication, acknowledgements); 490 pp. (including table); [1] p. (errata); numerous diagrams and maps in the text. Contemporary half basane, boards covered with green marbled paper, titled spine (binding slightly rubbed). First edition of this work tracing the history of hypotheses on the southern continent by Armand Rainaud, a professor of history and geography and a Doctor of Letters. In his introduction, Rainaud explains the hypothesis which, from antiquity, led to questions about this unknown southern land: "One of the greatest problems in the history of geography is that of the antipodes. Human curiosity, the starting point of all scientific progress, has always sought to cross the boundaries of positive knowledge. Outside the old world, the orbis vetus, are there not a few distant lands, destined to balance the continental mass of Eurasia and Africa to the west and south? Hence the double problem of the antipodes: western antipodes, southern antipodes." In this book, he deals with the question of L'Antichtone throughout history, namely the name given to this southern land, a hypothetical continent imagined by the ancient Greeks, and which would have balanced the masses of the continents of the northern hemisphere. The discovery of Oceania and then Antarctica finally put an end to this hypothesis. With a wealth of diagrams and maps, Rainaud provides a comprehensive review of the speculative literature on an Australian continent, from the hypotheses of the ancient Greeks to the discoveries of James Cook. Among the diagrams and maps are, in chronological order: "Ptolemy's unknown land south of the Indian Ocean", already envisaging this hypothetical land, "The system of zones in the Middle Ages", in which polar latitudes are described as "frigore inhabilitatis", and "The Southern Land on the Mercatorian map of 1538 (after Nordenskjoeld, pl XLIII)", depicting a gigantic Antarctica, although the famous cartographer admits not knowing its limits. A fine, well-preserved copy of this comprehensive examination of the question of the Southern continent throughout history.‎
