Edition originale de la première traduction française d’un ouvrage paru en 1934, tirée à 3.100 exemplaires (1/100 sur vélin crème du Marais, seul papier avant ceux sur alfa). ‎

‎Oulas SAMTCHOUK ( pseudonyme de Oulas DANYLTCHOUK) né à Derman (Près Rivne, Ukraine) en 1905, journaliste, écrivain, fut avant tout un nationaliste intransigeant, dupe de ses accommodements, d’abord avec les bolchéviks, ensuite avec les nazis ; rejeté par tous il mourra, en 1987, dans l’oubli le plus total, à Toronto. Mariya raconte les amours d’une villageoise ukrainienne, depuis l’émancipation des serfs en 1861 jusqu’à la grande famine de 1932-1933 (Holodomor) ; génocide ou non, les historiens continuent de se quereller. C’est le premier texte parlant de la grande famine, précédant de peu celui de Boris Souvarine, bien avant Soljénitsine : écrit en 1933, publié l’année suivante, la traduction française attendra plus de vingt ans ; dans sa préface, René ARCOS élude la difficulté : « l’auteur ne s’occupe de la situation politique (…) qu’à la fin de son livre », sous forme « d’un dénouement tragique (…) d’une grandeur antique, presque terrifiante ». Arcos, fondateur des Editions du Sablier, avec Frans Masereel, créa aussi, avec Romain Rolland, la revue « Europe », proche du Parti Communiste Français, d’où l’explication de certaines restrictions mentales.
