‎Henry van de Velde (1863?1957) is considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture: he is world-famous for his beautiful buildings, furniture, utensils and typographical creations. Van de Velde, however, is much less well-known as a painter and draughtsman. Nevertheless, he had a lot of talent, especially as a draughtsman: his drawings bear witness to great originality and sincerity. Ten years after his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1880 to 1883, Van de Velde exchanged painting for the applied arts and architecture, fields in which he would build a brilliant career. His enormous output in the architectural field ensures that there is little interest in his painting work ? that attention only comes much later. Most of Van de Velde's pencil drawings and pastels were made in Wechelderzande ? a small village in the Kempen ?, in Kalmthout and in Knokke-Heist. He also drew landscapes in Weimar and South Tyrol. Despite the large number of exhibitions devoted to Henry van de Velde, few paid sufficient attention to his paintings and drawings. It was only after his death in 1957 that interest in his creations as a painter emerged. This English-language catalogue of his works ? with a trilingual introduction by Xavier Tricot, author of the catalogues of James Ensor's paintings and of Fernand Khnopff's and L on Spilliaert's prints ? outlines Henry van de Velde's fascinating career as a painter and gifted draughtsman on the basis of some 60 paintings and 230 drawings. ‎ Henry Clemens van de Velde, de Belgische kunstenaar - eerst schilder, dan architect en ontwerper - werd op 3 april 1863 in Antwerpen geboren. Al voor de Europese eenmaking werkte hij in vijf verschillende landen, was hij erg bereisd ondanks de twee wereldoorlogen en onderhield hij een bevlogen persoonlijke carri re. Aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw speelde hij een beslissende rol op vlak van architectuur en sierkunsten, voornamelijk in Duitsland. Henry van de Velde vatte een studie schilderkunst aan in 1880. Hij volgde lessen bij Charles Verlat aan de Kunstacademie in Antwerpen en bij mile Auguste Carlolus-Duran in Parijs. Als aanhanger van de neo-impressionistische stijl werd hij in 1889 lid van de kunstenaarsgroep 'De Twintig' in Brussel. Vanaf 1892 liet hij de schilderkunst achter zich en richtte zich op decoratie en architectuur. Zijn eigen huis, Bloemenwerf in Ukkel, is ge nspireerd door de Arts and Crafts, een hervormingsgezinde kunstbeweging op gebied van architectuur, decoratieve kunsten, schilderkunst en beeldhouwkunst, ontstaan in Engeland in de jaren 1860 en ontwikkeld in de jaren 1880-1910, aan het einde van het Victoriaanse tijdperk. Van de Velde kan gezien worden als grondlegger van de modern style, de Angelsaksische tegenhanger van de Frans-Belgische art nouveau. Original photograph portrait of Henry van de Velde, signed in pencil by the photographer, size 22,5 x 16,5 cm, added are two holograph letters by Henry van de Velde addressed to the photographer and dated Oct. 20th (19)43 and Nov. 22nd (19)43. Letters of 2 pp, written on paper with the printed footer of '' la nouvelle maison'', 1 avenue albert, tervueren. From the letters we can deduce that the the portrait was taken on Tuesday 12th October and that 5 different poses were taken, of which van de Velde preferred the third. (We can't be sure that our portrait is the third, but the fact that the letters remained with this photograph makes this very likely). The architect , being just over 80 years old , sits in a three-quater pose with his hands folded in his lap. His left arm shows prominently a large black lozenge stiched to his jacket, mourning attire for his wife Maria Sèthe, who died the previous year. In the two letters the architect thanks the photographer and states that he is very pleased with it, he also writes about his publications of which he sends one to the photographer. Alfons van Uffelen (1895 - 1983) started as picturalist, follower of e.g. Misonne, he became professor at the School of Photography of the Gevaert Company (later Agfa-Gevaert). A large part of his studio was sold in auction in Paris Drouot May 25th year 2000. As far as we could verify this photograph was not included in the sale.‎

‎Naast de Gentse universiteitsbibliotheek werkte architect Henry van de Velde in de jaren 1930 aan nog een ander belangrijk Oost-Vlaams ensemble: de Polikliniek voor Inwendige Ziekten en Villa Landing voor Dr. Adriaan Martens in Astene (Deinze). Als pionier specialist in inwendige ziekten en dieetleer was dokter Adriaan Martens destijds een bekend figuur in de medische en politieke wereld. Dr. Martens kocht het perceel van beeldhouwer George Minne, en gaf architect Henry van de Velde, kort na hun eerste ontmoeting in 1931 de opdracht voor het ontwerp van een woonhuis en een polikliniek aan weerszijden van de Emiel Clauslaan in Astene (Deinze). De bouwwerkzaamheden waren klaar in 1934, respectievelijk 1935. Hoewel beide gebouwen op het eerste gezicht van elkaar afwijken door de verschillende materialen, kunnen er toch enkele opvallende parallelen getrokken worden. Met hun plastische volumes, de grote afgeronde hoeken, typische baksteenoppervlaktes en goed uitgedachte integratie in het omgevende Leielandschap zijn zowel de kliniek als de villa typische exponenten van Henry van de Velde's tweede Belgische periode (1926-1948). Dit boek focust zowel op de originele materialen en kleurenschema's van de architect, maar ook op de interieurdecoratie en kunstcollectie in zowel de polikliniek en Villa Landing. Daarnaast wordt ook stilgestaan bij de erfgoedwaarde van beide gebouwen.‎

Superb copy of the first edition of this collection of poems by the Antwerp poet Max Elskamp. Both covers contains a woodcut illustration by his friend, the great Art Nouveau designer and architect Henry Van de Velde. These illustrations rank among the first designs by Van de Velde and represent one of the first deliberately asymmetrical typographical layouts in the history of book design (see e.g. cat. item 79 in the Rice University, Houston TX, exhibition catalogue ''Art Nouveau Belgium France'', 1976.). This copy bound by the outstanding French master bookbinder Pierre-Lucien Martin (1913-1985) in half morocco with a matching case.‎

‎The Ghent University library with its famous "Book Tower" was designed by Henry van de Velde in the 1930s. It re-opened recently after a long restoration process under the supervision of Robbrecht en Daem architecten. Book Tower Images focuses on the rich artistic imagery of the monument. Over the years, leading artists and photographers such as Frans Masereel, Lucien Herv , Candida H fer, and Carl De Keyzer have visualized it abundantly. Jan De Cock, Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and others realized installations or dance performances in the building that were documented with the help of photographs and films. Juxtaposing multiple images of the same building, Book Tower Images deals with various models of architectural representation: from typical modernist architectural photographs by Emile Sergysels from the 1940s to recent explorations by Dirk Braeckman, Geert Goiris, Aglaia Konrad, and Walter Vorjohann among many others. Book Tower Images combines architectural photography with a myriad of other artistic and photographic practices such as documentary photography, street photography, fashion shoots, photojournalism, amateur photography, painting, drawing, video, film et cetera - with, of course, the Book Tower as leitmotiv. De Gentse Universiteitsbibliotheek met de beroemde Boekentoren, die door Henry Van de Velde in de jaren 1930 werd ontworpen, werd onlangs heropend na een lange restauratiecampagne. Hoewel de tentoonstelling Beelden van de Boekentoren inspeelt of dit heuglijke feit, schenkt zij niet zozeer aandacht aan het gebouw zelf maar eerder aan de rijke beeldvorming ervan. De bibliotheektoren werd in de loop der jaren immers uitvoerig gevisualiseerd door toonaangevende fotografen zoals Lucien Herv en Candida H fer terwijl kunstenaars als Jan De Cock en Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker er installaties of dansvoorstellingen realiseerden die met behulp van foto's en films werden geregistreerd. Door meerdere beelden van hetzelfde gebouw te confronteren maakt deze expositie een veelvoud aan architecturale representatietechnieken duidelijk: van de typische modernistische architectuurfoto's die Emile Sergysels in de jaren 1930 maakte tot de recente exploraties door Aglaia Konrad. Daarnaast koppelt de expositie architectuurfotografie aan een ruime waaier van andere artistieke en fotografische praktijken zoals documentaire fotografie, street photography, modefotografie, fotojournalistiek, amateurfoto's, schilderkunst, video, et cetera - met, uiteraard, de Boekentoren als rode draad.
