Summary The essays in this collection explore the motives and methods of marginalization throughout pre-modern Europe, Japan, the Ottoman Empire, and areas that are now Mexico, Iran, Peru, Syria, and Costa Rica. The authors offer a rich variety of perspectives on precarity and privilege, resistance and hybridity, they unpack the intersections of power, tradition, and difference, and they examine the relationship of marginality to both violence and creativity not only in the global Middle Ages and Renaissance but also in our present moment. While deepening readers' understanding of our antecedents, the collection illuminates the contemporary urgency of being 'ethically awake to the needs, sufferings, sorrows, and dignity of others around the globe'. Summary Although much work has been done in the field of Renaissance Studies, at present there is no book which offers a comparative overview of the linguistic interaction between Renaissance Italy and the wider world. The present volume is intended to fill this void, representing the first-ever collection of essays that deal with multiple types of language contact and cross-cultural exchanges in and with respect to Renaissance Italy (1300?1600). We bring diverse disciplinary perspectives together: literary scholars, historians, and linguists with different regional expertise; we argue for multilingualism and language contact as products of a period of dynamic change which cannot be fully grasped through a single framework. The contributions present a variety of case-studies by often cross-fertilising their approaches with other disciplinary lenses. This book aims to provide a comprehensive picture of a truly global Renaissance Italy where languages, textual traditions, and systems of knowledge from different geographical areas either combined or clashed. It takes a fresh approach to the history of late medieval and early modern Italy by focusing on East/West linguistic and cultural encounters, transmission of ideas and texts, multilingualism in literature (various genres and various forms of multilingualism), translation practices, reception/adaptation of new knowledge, transculturalism and literary exchanges, and the relationship between languages and language varieties. The Study of Medieval Manuscripts of England: Festschrift in Honor of Richard Pfaff, edited by George Hardin Brown and Linda Ehrsam Voigts, consists of sixteen important studies, all dealing with manuscripts produced in medieval England. The first group reflects the meticulous analysis of liturgical manuscripts that characterize the honorand's career. These treat both early and late medieval liturgical concerns and include liturgy for Gilbertine lay brothers, a lost treatise by Amalarius, the re-working of an Anglo-Saxon Gospel book; the music for the Vigil of St. Thomas Becket; and the continuity of Processions from Old Sarum to Salisbury Cathedral. Two studies examine the liturgies having to do with saints in Sarum missals and breviaries. The second, historical, section of this volume includes three studies on Anglo-Saxon manuscripts. Six other analyses concern the high and later Middle Ages: an illuminated crusade manuscript; codicological evidence for revising the traditional dates associated with Gilbertus Anglicus's life and writing; evidence for Bishop William Reed's collection and donation of books to Oxford colleges in the later fourteenth century; anomalous writings in a sermon codex; the records of the private incomes of monks at Westminster Abbey; and a catalogue and analysis of medieval manuscripts containing moral philosophy. Origine : sud des Pays-Bas; Illustrated Apocalypse which also features a series of illuminations on the life of Saint John the Evangelist as an introduction and colophon. It was produced around 1400 in the southern Netherlands. Its iconographic cycle is very similar to that of other 13th-century English Apocalypses ? also told in images. The illustrations in the codex are not only abundant, but also appealing in their colour, freshness and dynamism. Moreover, the narrative eloquence is such that it inevitably refers to the iconographic tradition of picture books and their entertaining nature.

"For me, people come first," Alice Neel (1900?1984) declared in 1950. "I have tried to assert the dignity and eternal importance of the human being." This ambitious publication surveys Neel's nearly 70-year career through the lens of her radical humanism. Remarkable portraits of victims of the Great Depression, fellow residents of Spanish Harlem, leaders of political organizations, queer artists, visibly pregnant women, and members of New York's global diaspora reveal that Neel viewed humanism as both a political and philosophical ideal. In addition to these paintings of famous and unknown sitters, the more than 100 works highlighted include Neel's emotionally charged cityscapes and still lifes as well as the artist?s erotic pastels and watercolors. Essays tackle Neel's portrayal of LGBTQ subjects; her unique aesthetic language, which merged abstraction and figuration; and her commitment to progressive politics, civil rights, feminism, and racial diversity. The authors also explore Neel's highly personal preoccupations with death, illness, and motherhood while reasserting her place in the broader cultural history of the 20th century. Art historians have often minimized the variety and complexity of seventeenth-century Spanish painting by concentrating on individual artists and their works and by stressing discovery of new information rather than interpretation. As a consequence, the painter emerges in isolation from the forces that shaped his work. Jonathan Brown offers another approach to the subject by relating important Spanish Baroque paintings and painters to their cultural milieu.

This volume offers a new, multi-focused approach to Florentine society under Lorenzo the Magnificent, Savonarola?s religious regime and the unsettled early decades of the sixteenth century, crucial periods of change that are often treated separately. This volume examines Florentine society at crucial moments of change that are often treated separately in historical narratives: the later years of Medici government under the aegis of Lorenzo the Magnificent, the four tumultuous years of Savonarola?s religious regime from 1494 to 1498, and the unsettled early decades of the sixteenth century. Drawing upon original research conducted during the past decade, it provides important insights into the politics and conflicting ideologies in the city as experienced by different levels of society, not only by the politicians, preachers, and intellectuals whose voices are more familiar to us, but also by women and lower-class citizens. Since no single paradigm is adequate to describe these years of flux, this volume attempts to reassess the period by uncovering the debate underlying nearly all the topics it discusses. In this way, it offers a new and multifocused approach to the study of this important and influential period in Florentine history. Alison Brown is Emerita Professor of Italian Renaissance History at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her books on Florentine politics and political thought include Bartolomeo Scala, 1430-1497, Chancellor of Florence: The Humanist as Bureaucrat (1979); The Medici in Florence: The Exercise and Language of Power (1992); The Renaissance (1999); and The Return of Lucretius to Renaissance Florence (2010). It's bedtime in the Star Wars galaxy and Darth Vader's parenting skills are tested anew in this delightful follow-up to the breakout New York Times bestsellers Darth Vader and Son and Vader's Little Princess. In this Episode, the Sith Lord must soothe his rambunctious twins, Luke and Leia, who are not ready to sleep and who insist on a story. As Vader reads, the book looks in on favourite creatures, droids and characters, such as Yoda, R2-D2, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Maul, Admiral Ackbar, Boba Fett and many others as they tuck in, yawn and settle down to dream. As ever, Jeffrey Brown's charming illustrations and humour glow throughout, playing on children's book conventions to enchant adults and kids alike.

1 volume, 8vo (237 x 156 mm): vii, 80 pp., with 1 engraved plate at the end. (Stains and water stains). Publisher's printed cover, blank spine (soiling and repairs on the spine). A rare copy of this publication documenting the controversy between the British and the French over who first deciphered hieroglyphs; a pamphlet published anonymously in a small print run, translating an article by Mr. Brown from an English journal. Its author, who signs as L.J.Dn., states in his preface: The numerous works on Egyptian antiquities published in recent years in England, France, and Germany are little known to the public. The newspapers in France have been filled with emphatic announcements and exaggerated assertions regarding a few works printed in Paris; but the utmost silence has been maintained regarding the importance and precedence of the work undertaken in England on the same subjects; one has also managed to conceal their existence and take advantage of them. Certain individuals have succeeded in having these maneuvers regarded as serving the national interest, apparently judging that the national interest demands claiming what does not belong to us, without concerning ourselves with justice or truth, and that the vanity of a few individuals must serve as the standard for the perspective of an entire nation. [] Mr. Brown published, in the Edinburgh Review (No. 89, 1826; and No. 90, 1822), a very detailed analysis of the works that have recently been published on Egyptian writings and antiquities. It contains what is lacking in all the reviews published in France: a robust, informed, and impartial discussion. The legitimate claims of each party are set forth and fairly assessed. It provides all the necessary details to enable the reader to fully judge the authors claims and the merit of their work. [] And he concludes: There can therefore be no doubt that Mr. Champollions so-called discovery is based on that of Dr. Young, to whom belongs the credit for having first demonstrated that hieroglyphic signs were used in Egypt to represent the sounds of proper names. To dispute this scholars priority in this discovery would be as absurd as claiming that the person who first mixed saltpeter with sulfur and charcoal was not the inventor of gunpowder, but rather the one who first used this mixture as a propellant for projectiles. Mr. Browns text provides a historical overview of research on Egyptian hieroglyphs and offers his analysis of recent publications by Young and Champollion on the subject. Copy with all margins intact.
