AL'BOM Indijskich i Persidskich Miniatjur XVI-XVIII VV - ALBUM of Indian and Persian Miniatures of the XVI-XVIIIth Centuries.
Moscow, Vostocnoj Literatury, 1962. Portfolio containing 111 loose mounted plates (complete) of which 11 in colour, with a booklet of 81, (1) pages in Russian containing descriptions of the plates + a smaller (8vo) booklet with short descriptions of same in English. Folio. Portfolio of olive green cloth with decorative blind stamping, titles in Cyrillic on front. Originally compiled in Iran in the middle of the 18th century by Muhammad-Hadi, Muhammad-Baqir and Muhammad-Sadiq, and acquired in 1912 from the Russian Musuem to which it had been given in 1910 as a personal gift of Emperor Nicolai II. It has been housed since in the permanent collection of the Institute for the History of Material Culture in Leningrad (formally known as the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of the Peoples of Asia). It contains reproductions of the works of miniature painters and calligraphers Abu-I-Hasan Nadir as-Zaman, Ali-Quli-Bek Jabbadar, Bayak, Govardhan, Gul-Muhammad Haddji Muhammad, Manohar Das, Mansur, Mir Kalam, Muhammad-Baqir Muhammad-Hadi, Muhammad-Riza-yi Hindi, Muhammad-Sadiq, Muhammad Sultani, Muhammad-Zaman, Nanha, Visnu Das, Mir Imad al-Hasani. Presentation copy by the Library of the Institute of Peoples of Asia, Academy of Sciences, Moscow, to my father, Anton Gerits (here written as Geritz), dated October 29, 1964.

AUTOGRAPH Letter Signed by Lamoignon, addressed to Calonne, dated "Versailles, le 28 juin 1762" in which Lamoignon praises Calonne for the condamnation of "le livre du Sr. Rousseau" by the Parlement of Flanders, where Calonne occupied various positions in that time before becoming comptroller-general of the finances of France.
4 pages, 1 with text, three blank. 4to. Magnificent letter in which Malesherbes writes to Calonne "J'ay reçu les deux exemplaires de l'Arrest du Parlement de Flandre qui condamne le livre du Sr Rousseau. Cet ouvrage à déjà été flétri par Arrest du Parlement de Paris, comme il mérite de l'être, et puisqu'il se distribuait dans vostre Province, vous avez très bien fait d'en requerir la condamnation." This letter deals with, undoubtedly, the condamnation of Rousseau's famous Emile. On June 9, 1762 Rousseau's work was condamned and forbidden by the Parlement de Paris. It is clear from this letter that the province of Flanders followed on June 28 the same year. The author of this letter is the father of Lamoignon de Malesherbes, Guillaume de Lamoignon (1683-1772), chancellor of France from 1750 to 1768.The recipient of the letter is Charles-Alexandre de Calonne, at the time active in various positions in Artois and Douai in French Flanders, who later became comptroller-general of the finances of France. Under his ministry the first assembly of the Notables was convened.

The organ of the 'Cercle Social', defenders of the 'tribuns' of the people. The primary function was to reprint the minutes of the Cercle Social meetings and discuss issues relevant to the club's concerns. Worthy of special mention are Fauchet's weekly commentaries on Rousseau's Contrat Social, many of Etta Palm's feminist writings, speeches by Condorcet on political matters, a debate over Voltaire's place among the Revolutionary patriarchs, and a letter by Madame Roland advocating inheritance law reform. During the spring of 1791, the journal reprinted many documents from the burgeoning democratic movement, including several Cordeliers Club petitions. Among the other authors published in this journal were Cloots and Thomas Paine (Historical Dictionary of the French Revolution, 1789-1799, vol. 1, p. 112).

By mid-eighteenth century, it was receiving from the intendant's subdelegates bi-weekly reports of the market prices of grains, bread, vegetables, meat, wool, linen, and iron and from the inspectors of manufactures semiannual reports on the production of woolen, cotton, and linen cloth. From time to time it conducted also special statistical inquiries on mining, metallurgical industries, paper manufactures, tanneries, forests, and hemp and on population (births, marriages and deaths). After many interruptions during the Revolution, the governments of the Directory, the Consulate and Empire intensified this statistical effort. Lucien Bonaparte and Jean Chaptal, Bonaparte's second and third ministers of interior, established the Bureau of Statistics, which lasted until 1812. Under an imaginative minister of interior, Chaptal, and a zealous bureau chief, Alexander de Férrière, it launched a massive statistical description of France in 1801. Prefects of each department were instructed to secure from subprefects, mayors, and local savants and societies of agriculture detailed descriptive (verbal) and quantative data on the topography, population, agriculture, industry, and commerce of their jurisdiction in 1789 and 1801. This was to be a vast cooperative inquiry with a twofold purpose: to discover what change had occured during the Revolution and to establish for 1801 a cross-sectional description of France from which later demographic and economic movement could be measured. This new court, from which there was no appeal, was instituted at a time when Revolutionary France seemed in a desparate situation: military defeats, the treason of Dumouriez and the eruption of counterrevolution in the Vendée and riots in Paris.The Tribunal was to have jurisdiction over all counterrevolutionary activities, all attacks on liberty, equality, unity, the indivisibility of the Republic, the internal and external security of the state, and all plots tending to reestablish the monarchy or any other authority hostile to liberty, equality, and the sovereignty of the people. The most famous name attached to the Tribunal is that of Fouquier-Tinville. Contains:1. COLLECTION of "mémoires" and "consultations" concerning the trial of the guardians of Mademoiselle de Melun, the Duc de Bethune and the "bourgeois" Jean-Etienne Dat, against the Marquis de Becelaer concerning the inheritance and testament of Mademoiselle de Risbourg.
All bound in three 4to volumes. Contemporary red morocco, spines gilt with raised bands, labels with gilt lettering, two volumes with a gilt stamped ornamental center piece on both sides, all three with a floral ornament in the corners, gilt borders (two volumes) and gilt double fillet (one volume), two volumes with gilt edges, joints of two volumes rubbed, extremities shaved. Very interesting and important legal document: these pieces deal with the trial of the Duc de Bethune and J.-E. Dat against the Marquis de Becelaer with regard to the heritage of Mademoiselle de Melun. The inheritance in question came from Mademoiselle de Risbourg who had made up a will on October 31, 1746, which she changed on November 4, 1746. The Duc de Bethune, J.-E. Dat and Mademoiselle de Melun oppose this change and claim that the original will as drafted on October 31 is the valid one and that the Marquis de Becelaer has manipulated Mademoiselle de Risbourg into changing her will shortly thereafter. All mentioned parties were heirs in both versions of the will: what changed however was what each of them received. The manuscript "Extrait des registres de la Cour du Parlement" text at the end of volume 3 rules in favour of the defendant, the Marquis de Becelaer.The third volume has a particular feature: the first and third texts are printed on small folio sized paper and have been bound crosswise in the volume and folded to match within the binding.
