"... pour ce qui a rapport au redressement des dents, dont quelques personnes cherchent aujourd'hui à faire l'objet d'une sorte de specialité, comme chose nouvelle, j'ai sanctionné tout ce que j'avais anciennement dit à cet égard par des explications qui indiquent d'une manière irréfutable tout ce qu'il est possible d'attendre de nous, en même temps qu'elles marquent le point précis auquel la prudence veut que se bornent nos tentatives, mais que les prétendus novateurs me semblent trop disposés à franchir". ... avec de prècieuses informations sur la fabrication de prothèses pour la bouche... "On se sert de plusieurs substances pour la fabrication des dents artificielles : tantôt on emploie des dents humaines, d'autres fois des dents ou défenses de plusieurs grands animaux tant terrestres qu'amphibes, telles que les dents d'hippopotame ou cheval marin, celles de l'éléphant qui forment l'ivoire, celles de morse ou vache marine et de phoque ou veau marin. On s'est encore servi quelquefois de dents de boeuf, de cheval, de cerf, même de mouton..." Aujourd'hui on accorde généralement la préference aux dents humaines, à celles de cheval marin ou hippopotame, et à la pâte minérale, dont on a fait les dents appelées à raison incorruptibles". L'auteur est aussi connu pour avoir inventé un amalgame dentaire à base d'argent et de mercure. Mais sa formule, économique et facile à utiliser, fut vite abandonée pour sa tendence à s'étendre après l'intervention.
